Nevada Ballet Theatre Presents: A Balanchine Celebration
Nevada Ballet Theatre (NBT) is proud to present A Balanchine Celebration as the Company’s opening performance at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts for its 2015-2016 season. Each piece will be accompanied by a full orchestra featuring members of the Las Vegas Philharmonic, under the direction of guest conductor, Leif Bjaland. Performances will take place on Saturday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 8 at 2 p.m. with tickets starting at $29.
This exciting trio of ballets begins with one of Balanchine’s most meaningful and historical works, Serenade, the first ballet he choreographed in America. Slaughter on Tenth Avenue – a Las Vegas premiere – is next on the program and ushers in Broadway dreams, Russian dancers and the Mob from the classic Rodgers and Hart comedy On Your Toes, which demonstrates Balanchine’s triumphs on both stage and screen. A celebratory finale of romance and love set against a city skyline completes the evening with Who Cares? where the bubbly Americana songbook of George Gershwin is brought to life with colorful ensemble dancing, romantic duets and sparkling solos.
“The combination and range of these three works demonstrate what a genius George Balanchine was and the influence he has had on the dance world,” said NBT Executive Director & CEO Beth Barbre. “From jazz to classical ballet, he was able to seamlessly blend so many styles of the art form. Our dancers are thrilled to perform these world-renowned pieces here in Las Vegas.”
Insights
Nevada Ballet Theatre will also present a free pre-performance educational presentation, called Insights, in the Troesh Studio Theater at The Smith Center, starting 45 minutes prior to each performance time (6:45 p.m. Nov. 7; 1:15 p.m. Nov. 8). Designed to illuminate the creative process and narrative of each work, Insights for A Balanchine Celebration will feature a Q&A session with Mr. Balanchine’s longtime personal assistant and one of the founders of his Trust, Barbara Horgan and will be moderated by famed “Balanchine Ballerina” and Vanity Fair contributing editor Heather Watts.
About the Performance
Serenade is considered “a milestone in the history of dance.” A signature work of New York City Ballet, it has rarely been out of their repertoire. Without a narrative, it contains four movements: “Sonatina,” “Waltz,” “Russian Dance” and “Elegy.” This beautiful work originated from an evening ballet class where Balanchine taught his students the differences between class work and stage technique. Balanchine even incorporated spontaneous rehearsal “mishaps” into the work, such as a dancer falling or a student arriving late to class. Its first presentation was in 1934 by students at the School of American Ballet at an estate in White Plains, New York. Since then, it has been performed and admired worldwide.
This production is supported by a grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, in honor of Nancy Houssels.
Tickets can be ordered by calling The Smith Center Box Office at (702) 749-2000 or by visiting www.nevadaballet.org.

FAST CARS! Latest Result From The Bullring At The LVMS
For the second consecutive year, California drivers reigned supreme at The Bullring’s Fall Classic at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Linny White of Fontana used a great re-start late in the 150-lap Super Late Models Open Comp 150 to power his way to the checkered flag and a $10,000 pay day. He took control of the race late after 2014 Open Comp winner Jeremy Doss was sent to the rear of the pack for spinning out White in turn two on the 130th lap.
Doss had passed top qualifier Ryan Cansdale on the 108th lap after Cansdale dominated the first two-thirds of the feature before being hit with the penalty. Doss fought his way back to fifth, while Cansdale took fourth.
The night belonged to White, who did not have any plans to blow his five-figure check in Vegas casinos. “I’m going to go back to the room and go to sleep, because I’m tired,” said White, who was driving in a borrowed fire suit because his was stolen earlier this year. “Man, that was intense. I lost my brakes on lap 60, and we nursed it to the end. Dustin (Ash), this is his place, and he kept trying to bully me on that re-start. “He was tire-rubbing me, so I took off, and I think I caught him off-guard. I think that was the move of the race, honestly.”
White, who finished 1.619 seconds ahead of 55-time Bullring race winner Dustin Ash, was highly complimentary when talking about his team after the big win.“I just had the dream team tonight, and I’m just so thankful for everybody who comes out and wrenches on this car and helps us,” he said. “I couldn’t do it without them. I’m just the dumb guy behind the wheel.”
Bakersfield, Calif., driver Eric Richardson dominated the Late Models 100 to seemingly earn a $2,500 check, but was disqualified after failing tech inspection after the race. Trevor Huddleston of Agoura Hills, Calif., who finished 1.458 seconds behind Richardson, took home the win as a result.
In the Super Stocks 50-lap feature, Bullring season champion Jason Kiser appeared to win the race after finishing .001 of a second ahead of Steve Smith, but was docked one position for going too low to pass. Smith, of San Bernardino, Calif., was all smiles in the winner’s circle. “It was just a real loose car, and I was trying to stay out of trouble,” Smith said. “Thanks to the other two guys for taking each other out, because it put me in victory lane. I’d like to give a big shout-out to my engine builder, Steve Smith.”
After a tough Bombers season in which he was plagued by car trouble and bad luck, Utah’s Nick Nuccitelli won his first Bullring race in the 40-lap Bombers “Breakout” race. Sam Jacks was leading the race at the midway point before earning a stop-and-go penalty after breaking the 20-second barrier.
Nuccitelli was overjoyed to finally make his way to the winner’s circle. “It’s a dream come true, and I can’t believe I’m standing here in victory lane at The Bullring,” Nuccitelli said. “I’d like to thank all my friends and family who make the two-hour drive week-in and week-out to come watch me.”
Gary Scheurell of Kingman, Ariz., pulled away late to take the 25-lap U.S. Legends feature, crossing the line .864 of a second ahead of Danny Medina. It was Scheurell’s first win at The Bullring in more than 20 years of racing. “I’m back,” said Scheurell, who has had to deal with heart issues this year. “I’ve been racing Legend cars for 21 years, I’ve never won in Las Vegas, and we’re back. Thanks to my wife and my heart doctor – we’re all good!”
Dylan Nobile of Clovis, Calif., won his fourth USAC HPD Midgets race of the season at The Bullring after finishing .118 of a second ahead of Toni Bredinger. Nobile said the 30-lap feature would be his last at the short track, as he is moving up in class in the future. “I just hit my marks every lap,” said Nobile, who is moving up into the winged sprint car class next year. “It’s just about keeping your speed and keeping your momentum going with these cars. This is my last race here, and I will not be back, and I’ve enjoyed it very, very much.”
Faith Luther took advantage of a final-lap spinout, going from fourth to first in the 25-lap California Mini Cups feature. When leader Alex Krause and second-place Layne Hamilton locked up and spun on the final lap, they also forced third-place Austin Herzog to spin and that opened the door for Luther to hit the finish line first.
NEXT RACE – Saturday, Nov. 21 – The Bullring’s 2015 race season comes to a close with the West Coast Short Track Championships. There will be a full night of racing that will include the SRL Spears Southwest Tour Series Championship, Lucas Oil Modifieds Championship, SRL S2 Late Models Championship and USAC HPD Midget Series Championship.
The Bullring’s concession stand offers $2 hot dogs, $2 Coca-Cola products and $3 Budweiser beer on each NASCAR Whelen All-American Series race night. For more information on all events at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, please visit www.LVMS.com and follow LVMS on Facebook and Twitter.

The Bellagio Fountains Get FUNKY With Bruno Mars!
The Fountains of Bellagio are getting funky. This week, in collaboration with Bruno Mars, Bellagio debuted a new Fountains show to the music of worldwide smash "Uptown Funk," adding to the attraction's collection of iconic songs. Mars was the first to watch the show at a private viewing with friends.
"I think they should change the name to the 'Brunagio'!" said Mars after viewing the show. "Never did I think I would write a song and have it be in a location such as this [the Fountains of Bellagio]. I hope it brings joy to people."
Uptown Funk sparked an international phenomenon inspiring countless tribute videos, remakes and pop culture references. The video, choreographed by Phil Tayag of Las Vegas' resident show Jabbawockeez, earned more than one billion views on YouTube making it the eighth most-viewed YouTube video of all-time.
Randy Morton, President and COO of Bellagio, said, "Uptown Funk has quickly become one of the most popular and beloved songs in the world, an instant classic. Uniting it with our beautiful and iconic dancing Fountains forms a phenomenal partnership that I'm confident will delight guests from around the globe."
The mega hit is the newest show choreographed by WET, the original Fountain creators.
WET Executive Designer & Director of Choreography Peter Kopik carefully choreographed the lively show spending nearly a month in front of the Fountains ensuring that each beat was met with the perfect spray, gyre or swirl of water. The fast-paced song is complemented by pulsing lights and dramatic cannons that shoot 460 feet into the air.
Kopik said, "It was exciting to have this opportunity to create such upbeat choreography. Capturing the energy of Uptown Funk was challenging but we are very pleased with the outcome. We believe the world will experience the energy through the visual interpretation in the show as well as the ability of the Fountains of Bellagio to showcase such a vast range of genres."
The Fountains of Bellagio is complimentary with daily performances that rotate more than 30 songs. The schedule is:
Every 30 minutes:
Monday - Friday, 3 p.m. - 8 p.m.

DRAKE Celebrates Birthday At OMNIA Nightclub
Saturday, Oct. 24 was a star-studded affair as GRAMMY Award-winning artist Aubrey Graham, better known as Drake, celebrated his 29th birthday at OMNIA Nightclub inside Caesars Palace. Making his way to the nightspot around 1:00 a.m., the Young Money artist and dozens of guests were escorted to Heart of OMNIA where they took over a few VIP booths before being surprised by a parade of cocktail waitress showcasing giant letters spelling his famous Instagram handle, “Champagnepapi” and an over-the-top black and white four-tier cake. Drake was seen in high spirits all night, sipping cocktails while dancing to DJ Fred Matters’ open-format stylings including the rapper’s hit song “Diamonds Dancing.” Spotted mingling with guests including fellow artist Big Sean, the musical sensation enjoyed the rest of his birthday celebration before leaving the hot spot around 3:30 a.m.
Earlier in the evening, Drake was spotted dining at Hakkasan Las Vegas Restaurant at MGM Grand with close friends and family. The 29 year-old rapper and his party sipped on Hakkasan’s namesake cocktail, The Hakka and enjoyed a number of signature dishes including the Jasmine Tea Smoked Beef Short Ribs, Roasted Silver Cod with Champagne and Chinese Honey, Mongolian Style Beef Tenderloin, Hakka Noodles and more.
