Three
Square Food Bank, in partnership with AARP and Weight Watchers, presents the
SNAP Experience January 27 through 31, designed to promote advocacy around the
federally funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly
known as food stamps.
During
the SNAP Experience notable dignitaries, influencers and celebrities will limit
their food spending while attempting to eat healthy, balanced diets. Each
person will spend no more than $18.55 total for five days – the amount
designated to those enrolled in the SNAP program.
The
SNAP program provides assistance to people struggling with food insecurity as a
result of unemployment, underemployment and poverty. Nevada currently ranks
among the lowest states in food assistance participation. More than 250,000
low-income Southern Nevadans rely on SNAP benefits, half of which are children.
For those with questions about the SNAP program, benefits and application,
Three Square offers assistance through the Three Square Center (702-765-4030).
SNAP
Experience participants include CEO of Three Square Food Bank Brian Burton,
City of Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman, City of North Las Vegas Mayor John
Lee, City of Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen, City of Boulder City Mayor Roger
Tobler, City of Mesquite Mayor Mark Wier, Rumor Hotel chef Steve Austin,
director of business development for Weight Watchers Heather Avila, assistant
UNLV men’s golf coach JC Deacon, comedian Vinnie Favorito, UFC Hall of Fame
fighter Forrest Griffin, KTNV morning and mid-day news anchor Jessica Janner,
comedic magician Mac King, KKLZ mid-day personality Terrie Springs, and VIEW
Neighborhood Newspapers copy editor Lisa Valentine.
Featured
participants will post daily blogs about the experience, meal choices, and
well-being during the week at www.snapexperiencelv.org.
