More than twenty skaters attended the official Maloof Money Cup launch party at the Palms Casino Resort Thursday, June 4, sponsored by Le Tourment Vert Absinthe Francaise and Miller Lite. The launch party was the official kickoff and countdown to the 2009 Maloof Money Cup. Created by Joe Maloof, owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and the Palms Casino Resort Las Vegas, the Maloof Money Cup returns to the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif. during the opening weekend of the OC Fair, July 10-12, 2009.
The kickoff event featured the Ante Up for Skateboarding Poker Tournament, sponsored by Monster Energy to benefit the Maloof Skateboard Assistance Foundation, a nonprofit organization started by the Maloofs to provide assistance to skateboarders who suffer injuries during contests. Jake Brown, whose 50-foot fall at the 2007 X Games inspired Joe Maloof to create MSAF, was the winner of the tournament. Brown immediately donated a portion of his winnings back to the charity.
Later that evening, Brown was joined at the launch party at Moon Nightclub by fellow pro skaters and MMC competitors: Adam Dyet, Paul Rodriguez (last year’s Maloof Money Cup Street winner), Pierre Luc Gagnon (last year’s Maloof Money Cup Vert winner), Lizard King, Bob Burnquist, Bryan Herman, Jake Duncombe, Braydon Szafranski, Brandon Biebel, Bobby Worrest, Billy Marks, Clarke Miyasaki, Corey Duffel, Heath Kirchart, Chris Gentry, Silas Baxter-Neal, Kurtis Colamonico, Adam Taylor, Rune Glifberg and Rodrigo TX.
