Improv Classes Coming To The Space

Forget about rehearsals and no need to memorize a script, Vegas’ premiere performance haven The Space introduces Improv International, a full-force workshop designed for everyone to learn the importance of thinking on their feet. Tailored not just for actors and performers but women and men from all walks of life, Improv International welcomes everyone to participate in this unique and life-changing workshop. Students will delve into the dynamics of improvisation such as ad-libbing, quick thinking, acting techniques, and characterizing actions to master and improve these practices both onstage and off.

“I think it's important for professionals based in Las Vegas to have the opportunity to continue to grow.  Not only for those of us who make a living on stage, but also for those who need to be quick on their feet.  The biggest thing missing in Vegas is professional level classes for professionals living in Las Vegas.  Lyndsey Hailey and Matt Donnelly quickly fill that void and I can't wait to take the workshop,” says Mark Shunock, creator of The Space and former lead of Rock of Ages.

Taught by professional performers with years of experience including Las Vegas’ own Matt Donnelly and Lyndsey Hailey, the classes enable students will not only get to perform skits and scenes, but truly understand the importance of improvisation and how Improv can benefit both on and off the stage. Improv International launches with a master class weekend workshop that takes place Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22 from 1 – 4 p.m., followed by an intensive 6-8 week course. The cost of the weekend master class is $125, plus applicable taxes and fees. Improv International is on a first-come, first-serve basis with only 20 students.  Registration is currently open. To sign up or for more information, call The Space at 702-903-1070 or visit www.thespace.com.

"Improv teaches people not only how to unleash their creativity but also how to create brilliant theater together as a group,” says actor and instructor Matt Donnelly. “Las Vegas has such rich and diverse types of entertainers here and I’m super excited to see the creative synergy that improv brings out of Las Vegas' best performers.”

"We teach that which we need to know the most,” says comedian and instructor Lyndsay Hailey. “I teach Improv because I needed to learn how to be present in my own life.  Improv helped me release my personal fears, blocks and obstacles that kept me trapped in my mind. This art form demands that you say ‘Yes And…’ to yourself and the world. Improv provides a workable system to living in the present moment. To me, presence is the key to great acting and performing, so once you understand how to get there, you unlock your limitless potential as a performer and a human being.”

Prior to his stardom in Las Vegas, Donnelly has trained, performed, coached and taught at the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theatre, The People's Improv Theater, and The Magnet Theater in New York City. As a performer in Sin City, Matt has performed in Wayne Brady's “Making It Up” at the Venetian. Donnelly has also taught and performed at Improv Vegas, as well as Improv Kingdom and has been a guest instructor at more than 60 improv festivals around the world. Donnelly currently performs in “50 Shades: The Parody” at Bally’s Las Vegas Hotel and Casino as well as “Matt and Mattingly's Bucket Show,” which was voted “Best Comedy Show in Vegas” by DC Magazine. Donnelly just wrapped his third season as head comedy writer for “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” on the CW and is the co-host of “Penn’s Sunday School” and “Matt and Mattingly’s Ice Cream Social.”

As a comedic performer, Hailey has screen tested for “SNL” and performed throughout the U.S. and internationally. She has toured with The Second City Touring Company, iO’s Deltones, The iO’s Roadshow and her own sketch shows “30% Chance of Hailey” and “Shauman Noodles.” Her show “30% Chance of Hailey” was awarded the Chicago Tribune’s Critic’s Choice Award and was heralded as “one of the most inventive solo productions in years.” Hailey also wrote, directed, produced and starred in “The Lyndsay Hailey Variety Hour,” an ensemble sketch variety show which has a residency at The Second City Up Comedy Club in Chicago. In addition to teaching in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, Hailey has lead improv and sketch comedy classes in over 10 countries including the UK, Canada, France, Australia, Belgium, Austria, Sweden and is very popular in Warsaw, Poland. Her acting credits include two features “Close Quarters” and “Uncle Kent 2,” which won the Viewer’s Choice at SXSW. She recently starred across Mark Boone Jr. from popular television show “Sons of Anarchy.” In the short film “Get Well Soon.” Hailey was also featured as a female comedian in the Gila Radner documentary “Girl in The Show.” Through her production company, Shoes Before Pants Productions, Hailey writes, directs, and produces a variety of comedy projects. Hailey is currently the female emcee for “Magic Mike Live” at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

Actress Michelle Rodriguez Has A Blast In Vegas

Michelle Rodriguez had a blast (quite literally) at Las Vegas’ Machine Gun Helicopters (MGH - machinegunhelicopters.com) as she fired a belt-fed M249 belt-fed machine gun from a helicopter high above the Nevada desert. Michelle experienced what it was like to be a military door gunner with MGH’s Door Gunner package for the ultimate machine gun experience.

Rooftop Party Coming To The Plaza Hotel & Casino For 4th Of July

The fully renovated rooftop pool at the Plaza Hotel & Casino, which opened last July to rave reviews, will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a special Plaza Pool Nights Fourth of July party on Saturday, July 1, with live entertainment, drink specials, and a barbecue buffet. The festivities will culminate with a spectacular fireworks show lighting up the downtown skyline.

This summer, the Pool at the Plaza introduced Plaza Pool Nights, dance and swim parties held under the stars on Saturday nights. On Saturday, July 1, the Plaza Pool Nights party will be the biggest yet this season to celebrate the pool’s anniversary and upcoming Fourth of July holiday.

On July 1, there will be music throughout the day at the pool, and in the evening, guests will enjoy live entertainment from Flashbax, an 80’s tribute band.

Beginning at 7 p.m., the cocktail bar at the Pool at the Plaza will offer a holiday drink special. Guests can buy one get one free of the special Firework cocktail (comprised of Strawberry Daiquiri, Pina Colada Rum and Blueberry Lemonade Vodka), which is on the pool bar menu for $10. The pool bar will also offer a selection of frozen and specialty cocktails as well as beer and wine.

On the pool deck, there will be a special barbecue buffet with all-American favorites like baked beans, cornbread, watermelon, BBQ chicken, ribs, brisket, corn, roasted red potatoes, salad and apple pie. The buffet is all-you-can-eat for $25 per person.

At the end of the night, the Plaza will shoot live fireworks from multiple rooftop locations at approximately 10:45 p.m. The show will last approximately 4 minutes, and while the best views will be from the Plaza’s rooftop pool party, the fireworks will no doubt be seen in the sky for miles around.

Entry to Plaza Pool Nights, including the special July 1 event, is free. Guests must be 21 years of age or older.

In addition to its private (yet affordable) cabanas, the Pool at the Plaza has ample space to relax poolside. Building on last year’s renovation that created a “retro Palm Springs-meets classic downtown Las Vegas” inspired feel, the Pool at the Plaza further upgraded its resort style furnishings with new cocktail side tables, more wet deck lounge chairs to meet popular demand, and a dedicated dining area with new dining tables, chairs and umbrellas.

For those who want a bit more activity, the Pool at the Plaza also offers a tennis court and 12 Pickleball courts, making the Plaza the only hotel/casino in Las Vegas with so many dedicated courts for this fast growing sport that combines table tennis, badminton and tennis. Guests can rent paddles, racquets and balls for a nominal fee.

More details on events and amenities at the Pool at the Plaza this summer are available online at www.plazahotelcasino.com.

Fresh Peach Chutney
I love the sunny color and piquant flavors of this British-style chutney. It pairs wonderfully with roast chicken, spicy shrimp curry, rice pilaf, or anything sizzling-hot off the grill.

Makes 3 cups

3 cups coarsely chopped ripe peaches
1 cup coarsely chopped apple
1 cup finely chopped onion
1/2 cup finely chopped bell pepper, any color
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup chopped candied ginger (optional)
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoons mustard seeds
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon salt

In a 3-quart saucepan or Dutch oven, combine the peaches, apples, onions, and bell peppers. Stir with a large spoon to mix them well. Add the raisins, candied ginger, if using, sugar, vinegar, mustard seeds, red pepper flakes, and salt and stir well. Bring to a lively boil over medium-high heat. Stir to coat all the ingredients evenly.

Adjust the heat to maintain a gentle but active simmer. Cook, stirring now and then, until the chutney has thickened a little, formed a pleasing syrup, and developed its flavor, 30–40 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature. Serve at room temperature.

Cover and store in the refrigerator for up to 2–3 weeks.

Blackberry Slump
What a forlorn little name for a simply delightful and homey dessert! Also known as a grunt, this simple treat begins with ripe blackberries simmered with sugar and a little flour to make a thick, jammy berry compote. Next you stir together a very soft biscuit dough and scoop it into walnut-sized dumplings, which you drop onto the sweet, bubbling berries and their luscious juice. Simmered briefly, the dumplings puff up nicely into pleasing pillows of berry-kissed dough. Serve your blackberry slump warm, and consider adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream, or a generous pour of cream, half-and-half, or evaporated milk.

 Makes 4–6 servings

For the blackberries
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 1/2 cups blackberries
1/2 cup water

For the dumplings
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small pieces
1/4 cup whole milk

To make the berry compote, combine the sugar, flour, and salt in a medium saucepan or a small Dutch oven. Stir with a fork to mix them well. Add the berries and water and stir gently. Place over medium-high heat and bring the berries to a gentle boil. Adjust the heat to maintain a lively simmer and stir well. Cook, stirring often, until the berries are surrounded by a thickened, shiny sauce, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cover to keep warm.

To make the dumplings, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl, and stir with a fork to mix them well. Toss the butter into the flour mixture. Using your hands, press and squeeze the butter to incorporate it into the flour mixture, working it until you have a dry mixture with pea-sized lumps. Add the milk and stir well to make a very soft dough, like biscuit dough only more moist.

Return the berry compote to the stove and bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Adjust the heat to maintain the boil. Using two teaspoons or a tablespoon, scoop up the dough and drop it onto the bubbling surface of the berry compote, making walnut-sized dumplings. When all the dumplings are in, reduce the heat to maintain a very gentle simmer and cover. Cook undisturbed for 15 minutes, or until the dumplings are dry and firm and cooked through. If you aren’t sure they are done, remove and pull apart a large dumpling. Remove from the heat and serve hot or warm.

Note: While a slump is best served as soon as it is ready, you can cool it and keep refrigerated for one day. To serve, reheat gently, adding a few tablespoons of water to the sauce, which will have thickened.

Famous Performer Donny Osmond Stops By The Palm Las Vegas

Last Wed., June 21, world-famous singer, actor and radio personality Donny Osmond stopped by The Palm Las Vegas, inside The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, to check out the newest addition to The Palm Las Vegas’ famous caricature collage – a painting of the legend himself performing on stage. Hand-painted by The Palm Las Vegas’ resident artist, Steve Spector, Osmond’s rendering can be found next to the likenesses of other world-class entertainers including Celine Dion, Rod Stewart and Jerry Seinfeld. Following the signing, the Vegas headliner snapped a few photos with eager fans and mingled with diners with whom he graciously posed.

Over the years, The Palm has become known for the caricatures that adorn the walls at each of the restaurant’s locations. The tradition began when Pio Bozzi and John Ganzi opened The Palm Restaurant in 1926. They had no money to decorate, but luckily, their location on Manhattan’s Second Avenue was near the headquarters of King Features Syndicate and attracted a large clientele of cartoonists. In exchange for their meals, artists often drew their own creations on the walls of The Palm. Now, the iconic walls have become a living museum of cartoons and caricatures of famous faces and loyal customers alike.
