Pigs for the Kids will bring mouthwatering barbecue competition, music, ice cold beer and more to Craig Ranch Regional Park—all in the name of supporting childhood cancer charities. The inaugural Pigs for the Kids Barbecue Cook-Off and Festival will benefit Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation and the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.
Like no other barbecue competition in Las Vegas, Pigs for the Kids will offer everyone—from backyard grill masters to professional chefs and restaurateurs—a chance to show their barbecue brilliance in a variety of categories. Teams will compete to take home the inaugural Pigs for the Kids Barbecue Cook-Off trophy; prizes will be offered in four categories: ribs, pork shoulder, sauce and beans. All styles of barbecue are sure to be represented and attendees can purchase a V.I.Pig Pass, allowing them to sample all the regional variations of great, all-American barbecue in the competition.
Inspired by founder Todd Radwanski’s daughter, Adilyn, who was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer at 8 months old, Pigs for the Kids was envisioned as a fun-filled community event to support organizations such as those that helped the Radwanski family during Adilyn’s illness. Now a vivacious, athletic 11-year-old girl, Adilyn served as ambassador for the Candlelighters’ 5K, serves as a peer mentor at her school and continues to serve as inspiration for everyone around her. It was Adilyn who suggested “Pigs for the Kids” as the name for this event and is delighted to be part of something helping other kids affected by cancer.
In addition, Pigs for the Kids’ 30 competing barbecue teams will be judged by 20 Kansas City Barbecue Society-certified judges and 10 celebrity judges, including performers Clint Holmes, Earl Turner local newscasters and performers from the show “Rock of Ages.”

New Restaurant By LV Chef Roy Ellamar To Debut At Bellagio In December
![]() |
| Chef Roy Ellamar |
Chef Roy’s culinary philosophy was cultivated as a child in Hilo, Hawaii, where he was surrounded by farmers, foragers and fishermen, gaining a true appreciation for the provenance of ingredients and the relationship with the producers. Working at restaurants throughout Hawaii, Chicago, Beverly Hills – and as executive chef of Sensi in Bellagio – he has become a staunch advocate of local agriculture and sustainably produced proteins.
“Over my years at Sensi, I built strong relationships with the best farmers and purveyors providing locally sourced products to Las Vegas,” said Ellamar. “Using the seasons as my guide and my travels as my inspiration, I will strive to complement the best ingredients with preparations that create memories.”
Harvest will celebrate popular aspects of American dining with its own style, including:
· Extensive charcuterie selections and artisanal American Cheeses, complemented with house-made breads and preserves
· Opulent vegetarian dishes such as the Ancient Grain Risotto made with foraged mushrooms, black truffles and truffle burrata cheese;
· Sustainable seafood cooked in a special stone oven, showcasing a whole-fish “catch of the day,” which will change to reflect the freshest market specialties;
· “Snack Wagons” traveling from table-to-table with interesting bites and small selections that allow guests to try Chef Ellamar’s “creations of the moment” as well as sample adventurous items;
· Classic cocktails featuring cold-pressed juices and homegrown herbs; and
· Grilled, dry-aged and grass-fed beef, a rotisserie featuring a rotating selection of organic poultry, pork and game birds, complemented by market-driven side dishes.
Designed by award-winning local architects Gensler & Associates, the restaurant will transform its former modern-elemental look in favor of beautiful wood flooring and walls and hand-blown light fixtures that exude a warm and inviting atmosphere. The main dining room will feature an exhibition kitchen to allow guests to view the creation of their feast. Additionally, Harvest will open its front façade, which will remain anchored with two iconic stone structures, to showcase a lounge boasting an immersive mixology experience ideal for social interaction.
Harvest will take the former space of Sensi, which closed Sept. 13.

World Andalusian Cup W/Iberian Horse Show Coming To The Southpoint Arena
Andalusian World has announced the second annual Andalusian World Cup will be held September 24-26, 2015 at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center in Las Vegas.
The Andalusian World Cup debuted last year and quickly became the most talked about Iberian horse show in decades, with hundreds of horses, riders, and exhibitors attending from across the country. The ground-breaking show format will again this year combine a variety of equestrian disciplines at one venue, and will be open to all horses with papers from any recognized Iberian Horse registry.
“The show was a resounding success last year, and we’re thrilled to announce this year’s show will be even bigger and better,” says Andalusian World co-founder Amber Lentz. “We have a few new additions this year. We’ve added a USEF/USDF/CDS-sanctioned dressage competition to the show schedule. And, we’re very excited about our expanded emphasis on youth participation, which includes the Vaughan Smith Memorial Youth Program. This scholarship program will award the winning youth free entries and stabling for the show, plus $1,000 for transport and other show expenses.”
The Vaughan Smith Memorial is presented in honor of the late Vaughan Smith, a long-time Iberian horseman and trainer, and friend of many in the Iberian horse world.
While there are several new things in store for the 2015 Andalusian World Cup, most of the events that made last year so popular are still in the schedule and the same format will be followed, according to Kevin Kidder, Andalusian World co-founder. “A full slate of halter and performance classes for Iberian horses will be offered again this year, including ANCCE morphology and functionality classes for ANCCE registered horses. And, back by popular demand, are cash awards for championship classes and lots of cool prizes,” says Kidder. “The Working Equitation competition, which is open to all breeds, is also on the schedule and will likely be even larger than last year. The relatively new discipline was an audience favorite in 2014 and a number of those spectators are already planning to participate.”
Many more details regarding the 2015 Andalusian World Cup will be announced in the coming months. Additional information about the Vaughan Smith Youth Program, volunteer positions, and sponsorship opportunities is currently available at: andalusianworld.com/awc/

Mendo Bistro, a contemporary American Bistro that has been pleasing the palates of both locals and visitors alike for sixteen years, will be given away via a writing contest that launched on August 24, 2015 and will end on December 20, 2015. Ingest, Inc., owner of the popular restaurant and bar (located in The Company Store, a historic building in the heart of downtown Fort Bragg), is sponsoring the contest to enable a potential winner to acquire a coastal restaurant with minimal investment. The winner of the contest will also become the owner of Mendo Bistro's sister venue, Barbelow, a popular hangout with a full liquor license, located in the same building and on the level below Mendo Bistro.
Nicholas Petti, chef and owner of Mendo Bistro and president of Ingest, Inc., explains, “In 1999, I was able to open a restaurant on the Mendocino Coast with very little money because people believed in my vision. I would like to give someone else a similar opportunity to pursue their dream. I'm now a tenured professor in the Culinary Arts program at Mendocino College, and I welcome the chance at this stage in my life to give back to the community that has been so wonderful to me, my family and my staff."
Contest rules are posted at mendobistro.com/pdf/OfficialContestRules.pdf. Entrants must submit a 250 word treatise along with a $100.00 entry fee by December 18, 2015. Twenty entries will be selected for a final judging by a three-person independent panel. The submissions will be judged on: structure of entry (introduction, body and conclusion), creativity, evidence of relevant experience in running a restaurant, the reasons the applicant would be best qualified to take over a local favorite, and their vision for the future of the business. The contest is limited to 7,500 entrants. (Note: Employees, both current and former, of Mendo Bistro and Barbelow (Ingest, Inc.) and their family members are not eligible to enter.)
Recognized on a national level for its award-winning coastal California cuisine, the media accolades for the 88-seat Mendo Bistro include a New York Times "Where to Dine on the Mendocino Coast" item and a distinction by Sunset magazine as having one of the "Top 25 Recipes of All Time" (the ever-popular crab cakes). Additional accolades include a San Francisco Chronicle Sunday Magazine inclusion, an AAA VIA Magazine reference, a California State Tourism Guide 2014 listing, and countless other media mentions. The restaurant has been a repeat first-place winner at both the Mendocino Crab & Wine Days Crab Cake Cook-off and the Mendocino Wine & Mushroom Festival.
