National Sushi Day Is On 6/18! Celebrate At Katsuya!

Katsuya at SLS Las Vegas will celebrate International Sushi Day with $9 signature dishes, $10 rolls, $7 sake selections and more, available throughout dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 18.

Signature offerings starting at $9 include baked crab hand rolls, Katsuya ceviche and a spicy albacore sashimi with crispy onion. Featured rolls starting at $10 include the corn crunch roll, rainbow roll, Sahara roll, tuna tataki roll and more. Katsuya will also offer snacks and salads from $5 to $10, including “Karaage” Japanese fried chicken, seaweed Sunomono salad, creamy rock shrimp and crispy Brussels sprouts. Other International Sushi Day offerings include $6 beers and $7 sake, $7 house red and house white wine selections, as well as $8 hand-crafted signature cocktails. Guests can sip on a Watermelon Cucumber Mojito, made with Bacardi rum, crushed seedless watermelon, English cucumbers, and fresh mint and lime; and the Katsuya Fresh, created with Grey Goose vodka, Rock Sake, hand-crushed English cucumbers and fresh lime juice.

Katsuya is open from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Daily social hour is from 5 to 7 p.m.

Las Vegas's Newest Entertainment Venue - The Park Opens Today!

MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM) today unveils The Park, a vibrant outdoor dining and entertainment district celebrating the beauty of the surrounding desert landscape and offering visitors a new way to experience the Las Vegas Strip. Located between New York-New York and Monte Carlo resorts, The Park is designed to become a social gathering space where guests can experience stunning design elements, a fun culinary lineup boasting great indoor/outdoor environments, iconic art and playful entertainment. Two 100-foot long water walls mark a stunning entry into The Strip's first park. The water used throughout The Park is on a closed-loop system that captures, filters and reuses the water.

Experience: An outdoor oasis inspired by the iconic plazas, promenades and squares that have served as important public gathering destinations within the world's great cities, The Park has re-envisioned the traditional pedestrian experience by adding a new layer of diverse social spaces in Las Vegas. It will draw passersby from the hustle and bustle of The Strip offering opportunities to experience Las Vegas outdoors and at one's leisure. The Park offers an array of common spaces for socializing, relaxing, exploring and sampling the surrounding tastes, sights and sounds.

By day, visitors can bask in pockets of sun or enjoy shade beneath mature trees with wide-reaching branches and spectacular, towering shade structures that rise 50 feet from the ground. Patio-style seating encourages a genuine social environment, while seating alcoves tucked into large planters provide areas for respite.

Unique water features, including water walls stretching more than 100 feet in length along the entrance, add unexpected visuals as do dramatic plantings incorporating a variety of beautiful desert blooms. As they explore The Park, guests may discover live entertainment such as acoustic guitarists, dancers, sand artists and more.

As the sun sets, illuminated elements of The Park's landscaping create a dramatic setting. The shade structures, works of art in and of themselves, emit LED sequences from high above, captivating guests below. Bliss Dance, the breathtaking 40-foot-tall sculpture of a dancing woman created by artist Marco Cochrane, stands as the centerpiece of The Park's inspired design and is illuminated by nearly 3,000 colored LED lights at night.

Ranging from 55 feet to 75 feet tall, 16 stunning shade structures line The Park, casting artful shadows by day and illuminating with beautiful colors by night.

Design: The design for The Park was a collaborative effort led by MGM Resorts International with master planner Cooper, Robertson & Partners, leading landscape architecture and urban design firm !melk, and Marnell Architecture.

The Park's unique design elements include:
Green Initiatives: The Park implemented an integrated environmental sustainability program throughout construction stages that will continue with operational focuses addressing energy and water conservation, green building and waste management through cutting-edge technology and innovative design. The restaurant corridor was built to U.S Green Building Council's LEED Gold standards, and The Park also replanted 75 mature trees from the current area to enhance the lush environment.  Asphalt existing on-site also was salvaged, ground and recycled to create new paved surfaces within the development and an on-site well provides all of The Park's irrigation water.
Natural Landscaping: Landscape design utilized native and desert-adaptive species of plants, which are able to thrive in hot and dry environments with minimal water. Large planters with inset seating feature dramatic plant life displays created by the juxtaposition of cloud-like plants (santolina, apache plum, mormon fir, etc.) alongside vibrant shoots (red yucca, torch lily, desert bear grass, etc.), lush grasses (Mexican feather grass, fountain grass, orange sedge, etc.) and spikes (blue agave, golf tooth aloe, horsetail, etc.).

Cooling Elements: Mature trees, vegetation, water features and artful shade structures create comfortable environments for guests to enjoy The Park year-round. Ground and surfaces have been constructed using marble - a naturally cooling material. Hand-laid in mosaic tile patterns, the marble features color palettes of the American Southwest.

List Of Upcoming Events At The Cosmopolitan

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas invites guests to celebrate Chinese New Year and welcome the Year of the Monkey with a traditional ‘Dotting of the Eyes’ ceremony, performances by world-class artists, festive cocktails and dishes from José Andrés’ China Poblano and daily gaming drawings.

On Sunday, Feb. 14 at 2:15 p.m., the resort will hold its annual ‘Dotting of the Eyes’ ceremony at the East Side entrance off Las Vegas Boulevard. During the ceremony, performers will ‘awaken’ a dragon and lions by dotting their eyes with red paint. Once awakened, the twisting and turning dragon will lead a parade of lions and dancers throughout the casino floor. Here are some insights from Sushi Roku’s resident Sake Sommelier Eiji Mori.  a 1,000 year old annual tradition held in Japan that serves as a tribute to the beverage, and kicks off the country’s sake production season.

•   Sake is made from fermented rice, but the rice is not the same grain that one would eat
•   To make sake, the outer layers of the rice grain are polished off—the more the center is          exposed, the more pure the finished sake will be
•  The three levels of sake are daiginjo (the most premium), ginjo, and junmai
•   Far from the often thought of hot “sake bombs,” cold sake is best for pairing with food, especially sushi. Heating can obscure the quality of the sake, and affect the taste buds
•  While many people liken sake to wine (it is called “rice wine” after all), it is actually more similar to beer, since it is not aged, and made from a grain rather than a fruit

When it comes to pairing sake with food, Eiji gives the following guidance—

•   Sushi or sashimi pair best with daiginjo sake because the pure, light, and clean notes complement the delicate fish without overpowering it
•   Acidic dishes (like Sushi Roku’s Salmon Carpaccio with soy truffle olive oil) are best served with the crisp, fruit-forward flavors of a ginjo grade sake
•   Cooked or fried dishes (such as the Japanese Fried Chicken “Tatsuta-Age”) pair well with junmai grade sake, because it has a bit more body and can hold up against heartier elements

International Sushi Day Is Coming UP! Celebrate On June 18th!

Going out for Sushi can be either a great experience or a MEH experience. How many times have you been really excited to try a new restaurant and you leave feeling less than satisfied? If this has happened to you then you are in LUCK, Thursday June 18^th is International Sushi Day. Celebrate by enjoying the wonderfully fresh delicious Sushi at Sushi Roku. They are offering a six plate sampler at 50% off for $18. Included in the sampler:

Sushi Sampler

Tuna – avocado, cream cheese, sesame oil, sesame seed.

Yellowtail – salsa fresca, mizore, arare

Salmon – mango, yuzu foam, ikura ponzu

Shrimp – cucumber, amazu, lemon zest, radish

My top three favorites were the Tuna, Salmon, and the Yellowtail. My dining partner’s favorites were the Halibut, Tuna, Shrimp. So our palates and likes were a little different but something from this sampler will have everyone saying “delicious and fresh!” Plus my dining partner had just returned from a trip to Japan and he did say that the food at Sushi Roku was on par with the Japanese food he had just tried.

Rib Eye Steak & Asparagus

Shrimp Tempura

Now of course Sushi to me is a wonderful dinner and I truly enjoy the freshness, however not everyone enjoys it. Sushi Roku has that covered, they serve a mouthwatering dish that is composed of rib eye steak strips wrapped around fresh asparagus, which is then presented on top of a hot rock, then you pour teriyaki sauce over and it sizzles and cooks just enough to bring out the flavors of the meat, asparagus and the sauce. Also on the menu which is sure to please both Sushi lovers and others is the Shrimp Tempura which is sweet, crunch and tender and FRESH. The tempura’s flavors were light and not overpowering and perfectly put together, not to sweet or thick which some sauces can be.

Octopus Salad

Have you tried a grilled octopus salad? If not then this is a dish that you will leave you pleasantly surprised with the overall taste of octopus. At other restaurants the octopus can be incredibly chewy and not very enjoyable to eat. At Sushi Roku great care is taken in preparing this delicacy. The preparation that goes into the octopus is lengthy as it is boiled, then cooled down, then prepared with seasonings.  Presented with red cherry tomatoes and green tomatoes and radishes it is lightly drizzled with olive oil and shitake mushrooms, truly this salad is an innovation in tastes and textures and will change your mind regarding octopus.

Sake Sampler

They have an extensive Sake and Wine list. Not being a Sake drinker I ordered the Sake sampler which had three grades or as the General Manager Johnny Seo explained the Kubota Kekijyu appeals to a Manhattan cosmopolitan palate, the Setsugetsu Bijin appeals to a Silicon Valley type of palate and the Nihon Sakari appeals to a Cowboy type of palate.  Try the three and decide which one is your favorite! These premium Sakes are clear and as GM Seo says are made with “purified water, rice and love.”  If you prefer a nice glass of wine try the house Sauvignon Blanc which was crisp and fruity.

Mochi Desert

What is a meal without desert? A refreshing and delightful desert awaits you at Sushi Roku, the Mochi Ice Cream, which is a Japanese confection made from mochi (pounded sticky rice) with an ice cream filling. I had the strawberry and green tea mochi’s and they added just the right touch to a great meal. Not to filling, yet sweet and satisfying.   

After this enjoyable dining experience I had the opportunity to sit down and chat with GM Seo and some of my favorite questions to ask someone in the restaurant business are:

What do you like to eat? “Steak I LOVE steak, but now I try and eat it twice a week.”

If you are in the mood for a quick bite (fast food) where do you like to go? “The only quick bite that I truly enjoy is an In-N- Out Burger and fries.”    

GM Seo is a true restaurateur and is welcoming and gregarious. There is no question that he will not answer and be sure and say hello when you are in for International Sushi Day!
