The grandstands at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway should have a youthful air on Saturday as the short track welcomes area students on Back to School Night.
All students, staff and faculty from Las Vegas-area schools, colleges and universities get in free to the 3/8-mile paved oval on the special night, which will include giveaways, raffle prizes and a full slate of short track action. Dignitaries from area educational institutions will be on-hand to wave green flags, a school choir will perform the national anthem and a number of Las Vegas students will be behind the wheel competing in several of the evening’s nine races.
A pair of NASCAR Super Late Models 35-lap features serve as bookends for the night’s racing schedule, with points leader Justin Johnson in a tight battle with six-time track champion Scott Gafforini heading into the event. Johnson, the winner of 48 Saturday night races at The Bullring, leads Gafforini 212-204 in one of the closest divisional battles of the 2016 season.
Points leaders Sam Jacks (NASCAR Bombers), Vinny Raucci Jr. (NASCAR Grand American Modifieds), Don Sargent (NASCAR Super Stocks), Travis Boyle (USLCI Thunder Cars), Cameron Morga (USLCI Legends-Pro), Michael Todd Glazier (USLCI Legends-Masters), Brian Williams (USLCI Legends-Semi-Pro), Caden Carlin (USLCI Legends-Young Lions), R.J. Smotherman (USLCI Bandolero Bandits) and Kayla Eshleman (USLCI Bandolero Outlaws) also will be in action on Back to School Night. The NASCAR Bombers race is a 30-lap breakout feature, where race leaders are hit with stop-and-go penalties if they break the 20-second barrier.
Gates open for spectators at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, opening ceremonies are set for 6:55 p.m. and racing follows immediately. Fans can call 702.644.4444 or go to LVMS.com to order tickets.
