Supporters
of Golden Rainbow came together at The New Tropicana Las Vegas on Wednesday,
June 10 to kick off this year’s “Ribbon of Life” by forming a Living Ribbon.
Approximately 75 people donned various shades of red to create the ribbon on
the corner of Tropicana Ave and Las Vegas Blvd to show solidarity with those
living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. The event kicked off this year’s “Ribbon
of Life,” which will take place Saturday, June 28 in the Tropicana Theater.
“We
are so grateful to everyone who came out to show support today,” said Gary
Costa, executive director of Golden Rainbow. “Having everyone come together to
raise awareness for HIV/AIDS is what the ‘Ribbon of Life’ show is all about and
today was the perfect way to kick it off.”
This
year’s event, Rockin’ the Ribbon, will benefit men, women, and children living
in Clark County whose lives are affected by HIV/AIDS. The rock and roll themed
show will feature stars from Las Vegas’ favorite shows including
“ShowStoppers,” “Jubilee,” “Jersey Boys,” “Million Dollar Quartet,” “MJ Live,”
“Legends in Concert,” “Pin Up,” “Vegas! The Show,” and more and will be hosted
by Edie (“Zumanity”) and Sean McAllister (“MORE” and “MORE Access”). The
production will be immediately followed by an after party in the Havana Room,
where attendees can mix and mingle with performers and partake in a cash bar
and hors d’oeuvres.
“Ribbon
of Life” was created 29 years ago by members of the Las Vegas entertainment
industry who saw the need for a support system when one of their colleagues was
diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. To raise awareness and money in order to help fight
the disease, entertainers organized a show. The show, then called "Golden
Rainbow," led to the creation of the nonprofit organization. The annual
event is one of the largest HIV/AIDS fundraisers in the state of Nevada and is
Golden Rainbow's main source of revenue.
