With
its doors closing to the public Monday, May 4, 2015, the renowned Riviera Hotel
& Casino is counting down its final weeks with a look back at some of the
highlights, fun facts, celebrity sightings and rarely-seen photos that have
helped build the iconic stature of the Las Vegas Strip’s first high-rise hotel
and casino.
Week six
of #RivFacts pays homage to the Riviera Hotel & Casino’s rich boxing
history, including the IBF World Championship Boxing heavyweight match between
four-time defending champion Larry Holmes and the undefeated Michael Spinks.
The fight, which was considered an instant classic, was held at the Riviera
Hotel & Casino’s outdoor arena in front of more than 11,000 people and was
also broadcasted live on HBO.
Spinks
defeated Holmes, who was a six to one favorite, in a controversial split
decision that would be called the “Upset of the Year” by The Ring Magazine.
