Ensuring
there will be no shortage of beauty inside the Life is Beautiful Festival
footprint, organizers are now revealing the details of its gallery-style
exhibits, set to take place inside the once iconic Western Hotel. In addition
to its previously announced street art and mural program, festival managers
have teamed up with art curator Patrick Duffy to present a multidisciplinary
pop-up gallery entitled ART-Tales, available all three days (Oct 24-26) for
festival attendees.
“To
say we’ve transformed the vacant space of the Western Hotel is an
understatement,” says Duffy, Las Vegas Art Museum president and chairman of the
UNLV Fine Art Galleries. “Though we want to keep the feeling of that iconic
bingo hall that this space once represented, our artists will present works
that go beyond what you imagine when you think of Vegas, and challenge patrons
to search themselves for universal themes and stories.”
Inside
the ART-Tales gallery space will be a plethora of artistic mediums across
multiple disciplines: from paintings to photography, sculpture, installations,
poetry and mixed media. Featured inside the space are many local artists,
including submissions from VAST space projects, Trifecta Gallery and students
from Las Vegas Academy. Some highlights include:
· California artist Eric Tillinghast,
whose water-based work was featured in last year’s Art Odyssey, will return
with a playful and interactive installation of water slides and kiddie pools,
entitled “Freefall”.
· Exploring themes of body and spirit,
visual artist Linda Alterwitz - known for her use of scientific imagery- will
create an installation juxtaposing large scale images of the Mojave Desert with
medical scans of the human body.
· Multidisciplinary local favorite Jerry
Misko will explore the idea of a well-rounded, cyclical life with his
installment of ancient and modern depictions of circular works.
· Trifecta Gallery will bring along a
collection of contemporary paintings and sculptures representing themes of
religion, survival, heart, fear, dreams and growing up.
· VAST Space Projects will present the
works of nearly 50 artists, a number of them native to Nevada, through new
mediums such as digital designs, printed matter, poetry and pop-ups.
· Students from the Las Vegas Academy of
the Arts will have the opportunity to enlighten guests with their visual
interpretation of dreams; while they themselves fulfill their dream of
showcasing artwork on a professional level.
· Works from the following artists will
also be presented: Audrey Barcio, Matthew Couper, Zak Ostrowski, Gina Quaranto,
Camilla Quinn, Miguel Rodriguez, JK Russ, Jesse Smigel, and Jevijoe Vitug.
Connecting
the themes and overall experience of each of the dozens of participants,
ART-Tales at The Western will be tucked within a cohesive space blanketed by an
aura of light and sound which completes the sensory experience of the
festival-goer. When stepping into this “gallery” – and the sub-galleries within
– one will be transported to a stirring environment which asks the observer to
fill in his or her answer to the question: “Life is ____.” ART-Tales will be
available from opening to closing of the festival from October 24-26, 2014
inside the former Western Hotel on Fremont Street.
