How
often do many of us really get to follow our dreams and change stride midstream
in your career and focus on what you love to do? Well read on and meet Cathy Brooks.
Her official title is Chief Human Officer at the Hydrant Club. What is the Hydrant
Club and who is Cathy Brooks?
It is
quite an interesting story on how the concept for the Hydrant Club was conceived
and implemented. Hailing from San Francisco Cathy felt that she wanted to
change her life and after a conversation with Tony Hsieh he invited her to Las
Vegas to follow serendipity. For a moment I was confused, I had never heard
of a person called Serendipity. When I asked Cathy who serendipity was she
explained of course that it is a "fortuitous happenstance" or
"pleasant surprise." Well I
knew that but this being Vegas one never knows! So Cathy and her dog Truman came to Vegas!
After
looking around she fell absolutely totally in love with Downtown Vegas. But
something was missing. There was not a happy, safe place for people to take
their dogs while at work or just for an afternoon out. So after many months of planning the
groundwork for The Hydrant Club was laid. The Club is literally a paradise for
dogs. Situated on the corner of 9th and Fremont Street it is an
enclosed green patch of lawn with trees and plenty of space for a dog to romp
and play.
But who
can join the club? Well if you are a dog owner such as me you know that sometimes
utilizing the public dog parks can be a bit frightening if you have a small
dog. There have been times when big dogs are in with the little dogs. We all
know our dogs but they are still animals and act upon instinct. Since dogs are pack
animals they all tend to get along but sometimes you do have an unruly one.
Before a
dog can become a member of The Hydrant Club he/she must meet Cathy and be
assessed in a separate grassy area. She looks for signs of aggression or any
other behavioral issues. If your dog
passes then he/she can become a full-fledged member of the The Hydrant Club. If
they do not pass Cathy also offers to work with your dog and help them with
their issues (this training is optional.). She helps the dogs and the owners
understand that dogs communicate with their nose, eyes, and ears. Her training speaks to the dog on his/her
level and then helps their owner understand the language. However she will be
the first to admit that no one has all the answers, but she utilizes positive
reinforcement training.
There
are several levels of membership and they are also due to seasonal weather. Your
furry friend can come for day care which will have them outside and inside. The
crates are large and roomy and have luxurious foam memory dog beds if your pup needs
a soft surface. This facility can comfortably lodge up to 25 dogs. Once your dog passes the behavioral test he/she
can come for a day or half day. If you decide to become a full member you will
be issued a key fob that will allow access to the play area.
My
dogs are my children and I would not have any hesitation or second thoughts
about leaving them at The Hydrant Club. Oh and a very special feature is the 14.5
foot yellow fire hydrant! This is a special hydrant; it will spout water at
three different levels for all size dogs! Can we say PAWTY!
