Funny & Amusing! New Pawn Shop Live! Opens At The Golden Nugget

Sabina Kelly

Pawn Stars Cast

Review by Allison Duck

Even if you’re not an avid watcher of the History Channel hit show “Pawn Stars,” you’re still in for a good time at “Pawn Shop Live!” The newest addition to the lineup at Golden Nugget is a must see for fans of the show and anybody looking for some fun afternoon entertainment.

The show focuses on the history and back-story of how the Pawn Stars came to be unlikely TV sensations. While most of it centers on this tale, there are bursts of audience interaction such as the opportunity a guest has to place a value on his wife if he had to pawn her. Hope he rounds up for his sake!

While millions are entertained with the history channel show, it is fun to get a look into the group’s origin story in the production that draws from Rick Harrison’s memoir “License to Pawn.” Through a series of flashback videos and entertaining reenactments, which are always funnier from Chump’s (aka Chumlee’s) point of view, guests can see how the world’s most famous pawn shop came to be.

The show is full of appearances by fun characters from the Las Vegas entertainment scene including Phyllis Diller and Criss Angel. Local celebrity journalist Robin Leach even gets in on the action as the voice of the announcer of the show.

Perhaps the most amusing part of the show is its self-awareness. It makes clear it doesn't have the budget of the Canadian clown shows but it also doesn't mind. Actor Enoch Scott, who performs a series of roles including the man behind the mask operating the “Old Fart” puppet, humorously brings light to this. After appearing in a gray jacket as the villainous government official attempting to block the Pawn Stars from gaining their pawn license, he later takes the stage in the same jacket as the cast cringes thinking he is the enemy returning. He points out, “Show’s too cheap to buy me another suit. Look, hair’s down, no eye patch: NEW CHARACTER!”

With his comedic timing and ability to morph into any character, Scott steals the show. While his fabulous singing voice is a bit masked by the accent he adopts for his character, Scott’s acting ability shines through even the oversized Old Fart puppet.

In addition to meeting the actors after the show, guests will see some familiar faces as Rick, Corey, The Old Man and Chumlee will often drop by, schedules permitting, for a meet and greet with fans.

Performances at 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday (5:30 p.m. instead through February 12). Tickets $28-$44.
