The
audience at the Las Vegas Philharmonic’s “Battle Born-Nevada Proud!” concert
this Saturday night has the chance to be a part of history. The concert celebrates the 150th anniversary
of Nevada’s statehood and will be recorded by Vegas PBS for future
broadcast. The concert footage will also
be submitted to the state’s archive commemorating the Nevada 150 celebrations. Vegas PBS plans to broadcast the concert in
April and again on Nevada Day in October.
KNPB in Reno has also agreed to broadcast the concert in 2014, making
this a true statewide celebration. This
will be the first Vegas PBS recording of a Las Vegas Philharmonic concert.
“Vegas
PBS is delighted to have the opportunity to make this event universally
accessible to all citizens of our state.
The quality of the Las Vegas Philharmonic and the excellent acoustics in
Reynolds Hall will make this a must-see event for patrons of the arts and will
introduce the Las Vegas Philharmonic to new audiences,” says Vegas PBS General
Manager Tom Axtell.
The
“Battle Born-Nevada Proud!” concert, held in Reynolds Hall at 7:30 p.m., will
be conducted by Donato Cabrera, a proud University of Nevada, Reno graduate and
former Las Vegas resident. The festive
program features Britten’s “Four Sea Interludes” from Peter Grimes,
Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto featuring violinist Alina Ming Kobialka, Eric
Whitacre’s Equus for orchestra and Debussy’s La Mer. It will be the first time the orchestra will
perform a work by Reno-born Grammy Award-winning UNLV graduate, Eric Whitacre.
“We
are proud to shine a spotlight on the talents of two important forces of the
music world with strong ties to Nevada with this concert and to be a signature
event of the official Nevada 150 celebration,” says Las Vegas Philharmonic
President & CEO, Jeri Crawford.
“Partnering with Vegas PBS to record this concert will allow us to
further cement our role within the cultural community of this city and this
state and to show that our musicians and our audiences are indeed Nevada
proud.”
The
concert will be Mr. Cabrera’s Las Vegas Philharmonic debut and his return to
Nevada: “It is very exciting to return to conduct in Las Vegas after spending
my formative years here and receiving my very first music lessons in the great
city. My family has been associated with
Las Vegas since the late-1950s and in many ways this concert with the Las Vegas
Philharmonic represents a full circle. Having
the opportunity to perform Equus by fellow Nevadan, Eric Whitacre, is such an
exciting opportunity for the Las Vegas community to celebrate the success of
one of their own.”
