Responding
to audience requests for opera music, the Las Vegas Philharmonic will open its
15th anniversary 2013-14 season and second season as a resident company of The
Smith Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, September 28th at 7:30PM with
a concert featuring arias, duets and overtures by composers Puccini, Verdi and
Mozart. The concert called “Operatic Love” will be conducted by Case Scaglione,
Assistant Conductor for the New York Philharmonic and a candidate for the open
position of Music Director with the Las Vegas Philharmonic. Joining the orchestra for the performance
will be guest singers soprano Suzanne Vinnik and tenor Cody Austin, two rising
stars of the US opera scene. This will
be the orchestra’s first performances of opera repertoire in the new concert
hall.
For
26-year-old soprano Suzanne Vinnik, the concert will not only mark her Las
Vegas Philharmonic and Smith Center debut, but also a homecoming. Suzanne’s love of singing began when she was
a student at CVT Gilbert Elementary in North Las Vegas and her first
performances were with the Nevada Opera Theatre as an eight-year-old. Suzanne’s voice has been praised by Opera
News magazine for her “beautifully molded, vividly communicative
phrasing.” She is a recent alumna of the
Opera Studio at Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Italy where she
studied under famed soprano Renata Scotto and performed in concert. In April she made her role and house debut as
Violetta in “La Traviata” at Florida Grand Opera.
Song
selections for the “Operatic Love” concert include Che gelida manina, Mi
chiamano Mimi and O Soave Fanciulla from Puccini’s “La Bohème” and the rousing
drinking song Brindisi and poignant E strano aria from Verdi’s “La Traviata”
alongside works by Mozart from his operas “Don Giovanni” and “The Marriage of
Figaro.” (Lyrics and translations will
be provided to the audience at the concert.)
The concert opens with the Triumphal March from Verdi’s “Aida” and
concludes with Richard Strauss’s Suite from “Der Rosenkavalier” featuring
orchestral excerpts from the opera that is considered to have one of the most
glorious scores ever composed for the opera house.
The Las
Vegas Philharmonic’s opening night celebration includes a pre-concert Cocktail
Party in The Smith Center’s Founders’ Room at 6:00 PM. Cocktail party tickets are $100 per person
and available from the Las Vegas Philharmonic, phone 702.258.5438. All Masterworks Series concerts feature a
pre-concert conversation with the guest conductor at 6:45 PM in Reynolds Hall
open to all ticketholders.
The Las
Vegas Philharmonic will perform ten concert programs during its 2013-14 season
at The Smith Center through May 2014.
The season is a blend of Masterworks programs and Pops Series
presentations. The first Pops Series
concert of the new season will be “Dancing & Romancing” on Saturday,
October 12th, a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers-inspired celebration of 1930s
Broadway and Hollywood featuring the music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and
Irving Berlin and more.
