Even Though It Is Vegas...BODIES The Exhibition Shows Cirrhosis Of The Liver

One of BODIES… The Exhibition’s core missions is to educate their guests on the importance of healthy lifestyle choices and displaying diseased organs is one compelling way to do it. Described as a “life-changing experience,” the Exhibition offers a three-dimensional glimpse into the human condition like no textbook can and presents an up close and personal look at how excessive alcohol consumption can impact the body. Among the 275 specimens showcased in the Exhibition is a shocking comparative look at a healthy liver and a liver ravaged by cirrhosis, as seen in the photos below.  The liver works hard to remove and destroy ingested toxins, such as alcohol, and abuse of such toxins can lead to the death of liver cells that are eventually replaced by scar tissue.  Cirrhosis is such a disease and its affects are responsible for the irregular nodules seen on the surface of the liver below.  These livers are just two of the compelling specimens that have persuaded thousands of people to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Healthy Liver

According to the American Cancer Society web site:

•In 2013, about 30,640 new cases of liver cancer were diagnosed and about 21,670 people died of the disease.
•The strongest associations between alcohol use and cancer are with the mouth, esophageal, laryngeal, pharyngeal, colon, breast and liver cancers.
•Long-term alcohol use has been linked to an increased risk of liver cancer. Regular, heavy alcohol use can damage the liver, leading to inflammation. This, in turn, may raise the risk of liver cancer.
•Overall, the amount of alcohol consumed over time, not the type of alcoholic beverage, seems to be the most important factor in raising cancer risk.
•Bottom line: limiting the amount of alcohol consumed may help lower the risk of cancer.

If alcohol is consumed, men should have no more than two drinks per day and women should have no more than one.
