Music
fans and art aficionados are about to see their worlds collide (and rocked)
when the global introduction of Rick Allen’s prolific and distinctive art
exhibit, Electric Hand: Rhythm + Change, makes its art stage debut at the
26,000 square foot Martin Lawrence Galleries at The Forum Shops at Caesars in
Las Vegas from Mar. 22 – April 10.
Already
home to the masters and the best contemporary artists of our time, the Martin
Lawrence Galleries will curate the work of Rick Allen, one of rock ‘n’ roll’s
most prolific drummers and a member of rock’s most elite bands, Def
Leppard. While Allen and his band have
sold over 100 million records and toured the world many times over, the exhibit
will have only one tour stop, Martin Lawrence Galleries in Las Vegas.
The
unique exhibition will be staged appropriately alongside Warhol’s Mick Jagger
suite. Besides being on display for the
three-week period, all pieces will be available for purchase at the
gallery. Additionally, Allen will make
special appearances on Mar. 28th and Apr. 4th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. where
he will explain the unique process of his art and the inspiration for the
exhibit. Allen will also be unveiling
and signing a limited edition exhibition art print.

With
Electric Hand: Rhythm + Change, Allen is translating rhythm into a visual art
medium through an extensive process involving drumbeat, light, photography and
graphic design. The result is a collection
of abstract imagery built directly from Allen’s rhythmic prowess. As one of the pioneers in this new medium,
Allen is holding true to his lifetime of breaking barriers and new ground. As for the actual process behind the visual,
Allen is creating the artwork’s imagery by capturing rhythm. Like a painter uses brushes of different
colors, Allen is using lighted drumsticks of different colors, widths and
temperatures to perform. Then, through a
sophisticated process involving the time-lapsed performance, Allen and
SceneFour (a Los Angeles creativity house specializing in the conceptual and
design of Collaborative Artwork with musical icons) work together to manipulate
captured light and color - bringing out the abstract nature of the rhythm before
it is laid to canvas.
“The
collection reveals something that up until recently I didn't even know existed,
presenting sound into light," says Allen about his work. “We know what rhythm and drum beats sound
like, but what do they look like? This is a window and a new way to define the
drumbeat and the rhythm as visual. It opens another dimension up, something
that the eye doesn’t see until it is bottled up – a rhythmic performance –
exposed in a single image.”
“While
we are primarily known for our Warhol’s and Chagall’s, we found Rick’s work
compelling and exciting,” explains gallery director, Staci Goulet. “Las Vegas is always pushing the envelope
when it comes to entertainment and now we are excited to be showcasing new art
in a new realm. We are thrilled that
Martin Lawrence Galleries can be the exclusive venue for the debut of Rick’s
collection.”
