December to Remember! Events from the Cultural Corridor Downtown LV!


A month of family-friendly, affordable, fun events begins Dec. 1 with December to Remember in the Cultural Corridor, Downtown Las Vegas. The museums, cultural organizations and parks showcase holiday traditions from around the world with a whole range of hands-on events and performances. This year, in addition to your traditional favorites, be sure to include the Corridor’s newest additions in your visit: Las Vegas Shakespeare Company, The Mob Museum and Neon Museum.

Winter Hobbies

See beautiful holiday displays featuring cultures from around the world and learn how to create unique winter crafts as you celebrate holiday traditions that span the globe.
Admission:  Programs are free with General Admission and to Museum members: $10 adult, $8 seniors/military/students 12-17 years, $5 child 3-11 years.

Join us in Winter Wonderland as we celebrate winter and all of its festivities. Create snowflakes to hang in your window or decorate the museum walls.

Gateway Arts Foundation Concert
December 2
2 – 3:30 PM
Enjoy noteworthy local young musicians as they perform in The Gateway Arts Foundation annual Scholarship Awards Concert, a culmination of a year-long competition. Afterwards, the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company hosts a reception to meet and greet the performers.

The Mob Museum
Repeal Day Party
December 5
6 PM – 10 PM
This event exclusively for ages 21 and over marks the date of the repeal of Prohibition. Hosted by the “Big Cheese” former Mayor Oscar Goodman, you’ll explore both sides of the story in this historical setting with live jazz music, vintage costumes, prohibition-era cocktails and other surprises. Dress in your Roaring ‘20s attire for the costume contest. Admission includes full access to the museum, commemorative photo, beverages, and more.

Las Vegas Jazz Society Concert
December 8

Join the Jazz society for an afternoon of standards and original material at The Irv Gordon Memorial Scholarship Concert.
Admission: $12 donation at the door

Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park                         500 E. Washington Avenue
Gingerbread Making
December 15
10 AM – 2 PM
Bring your family for a fun hands-on day of making gingerbread houses and other holiday ornaments while you enjoy hot cocoa and cookies. The Fort also hosts its holiday Wreath Sale, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Friends of the Fort.
Admission: $1 for ages over 13, ages 12 and under free.

Holiday Concert with “Hot Club of Las Vegas”

2:30 PM – 4 PM
Enjoy a "heated" holiday concert performance by Hot Club of Las Vegas. This all-acoustic Gypsy Jazz group performs smooth and sultry holiday songs that ignite the soul. Light reception and artists’ meet and greet after the concert.

A world of holiday traditions
Activities are held at 11 AM and 1 PM Saturdays and 1 PM only on Sundays, (following Critter Connections) except where noted.
Experience a variety of displays and special programming where you’ll learn how diverse cultural traditions are practiced, and see the universal themes of friendship and family.

Thai Traditions
December 8 & 9
Create festive bouquets of Thailand’s national flower, the Ratchaphruek (Rart-cha-pru-ek), also known as the Golden Shower Tree. Join us for a dance performance by the Thai Cultural Arts Association at 1 PM on Sunday.  

Winter Solstice

Learn about the seasons and how people from around the world have celebrated them.

Prehistoric Twist on Christmas
December 22 & 23
Join us for a reading of the book The Dinosaurs’ Night Before Christmas by Anne Muecke and Nathan Hale.

Japanese Traditions

Make a traditional Japanese Daruma doll to help you fulfill your resolution for 2013.

Winter Feast
January 5 & 6
Make a pinecone birdfeeder to help feed your feathered friends during these tough winter months.

Celebrate and learn about multicultural holidays: each week, daily activities and workshops reflect a different theme.
Hanukkah
December 8 – 14
Learn about the traditions of this holiday and why it is a special time in the Jewish community. Create holiday cards and finger paint the nine candles and flames onto a menorah.

Christmas
December 15 – 21
With Christmas just around the corner, create your very own holiday wreath that represents all holiday colors or create your very own Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.
Kwanzaa
December 22 – 28
Learn about the traditions of this holiday and make a woven mat, one of the seven symbolic items celebrating Kwanzaa. You can make other gifts including a pinecone Christmas tree or Hanukkah dreidel.

The Neon Museum                                                               770 Las Vegas Blvd. North
Las Vegas History in Neon
Monday - Saturday

See the rich history of Las Vegas as told by its fascinating collection of neon signs. With more than 159 signs, it’s the largest collection in the world. Stroll through the Visitors’ Center, or book your 1-hour guided tour of the Neon Boneyard.
Admission:
Visitors’ Center: free admission
Tours: $18 for adults (12 years of age and older); $12 for students, seniors ages 55 and over, veterans and Nevada residents; children ages 6 and under are free. A limited number of tickets may be purchased at the door; however, visitors are strongly advised to purchase tickets in advance at www.neonmuseum.org.

The Cultural Corridor in Downtown Las Vegas is on Las Vegas Boulevard between Bonanza Road and Washington Avenue. This nonprofit alliance features seven institutions, each offering unique historical or educational exhibits and programs: Cashman Center, Las Vegas Natural History Museum, Las Vegas Library, Lied Discovery Children’s Museum, The Neon Museum, Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park and Las Vegas Shakespeare Company; The Mob Museum is an associate member of the Corridor.
