First
Friday Las Vegas continues its tradition of bringing the Las Vegas community
together to celebrate art by welcoming the curators of “Burn Wall Street,” an
ambitious collaborative art project that will be installed as an Honorarium Art
Project at this year’s Burning Man event in northern Nevada.
"First
Fridays is excited to welcome “Burn Wall Street” as one of the features for
this month’s event,” said Joey Vanas, managing partner of First Friday Las
Vegas. “The artist and crew will provide the community with insight into how
large scale art is developed, from inception to fundraising, and built by
collaboration through hundreds of hours of volunteer work. It is a wonderful
feature for this month’s theme, ‘The Art of Science.’"
“Burn
Wall Street” was created by Otto Von Danger, a disabled veteran who has
designed and built large scale participatory art for more than a dozen years.
Von Danger’s purpose with “Burn Wall Street” is to spur an open discussion
among all members of the community, regardless of their political persuasion;
the project is fiscally sponsored by Veterans for Peace, a 501c3 non-profit.
“With
‘Burn Wall Street,’ I wanted to bring together the Left and Right wing
perspectives in an effort to show that there isn’t much difference between the
two sides,” said Von Danger. “What really matters is that individuals
understand their rights and participate in the financial and political system
in a meaningful way- not just today, but in the long run. Art like ‘Burn Wall
Street’ helps move that dialogue along.”
First
Friday attendees will be surprised by the unassuming exterior of the night
market set up for “Burn Wall Street” in the back of two box trucks. Inside the
rented trucks, however, participants will be delighted with the opportunity to
"Shoot the Bull," where $5.00 will give players five paintball gun
shots at the Wall Street Bull as he moves between derivatives to options.
The
Burn Wall Street Brokerage Office will be open in the second box truck. The
participatory experience will include three-dimensional graphic displays of the
project, a video presentation of the project that will educate the Las Vegas
community about Burning Man, and more importantly, “Burn Wall Street.”
At
the feature, collateralized debt obligations for the project will be offered,
which will ensure recognition by donors on the project’s donor wall. T-shirts
will also be offered for sale. All money collected to support the project is
tax deductible. The project will be located near the Casino Center main hub
between Colorado and California.
