‘America’s
Got Talent’ finalist loves playing Las Vegas; calls it an ‘adult Disneyworld’
A
couple of days after celebrating her 78th birthday Grandma Lee will begin her
two-month stint at The King’s Room in the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino
beginning May 31st.
In an
interview from her home in Jacksonville, Florida she said, “I love doing
standup in Las Vegas. I love the gambling and the people. It’s a happy place. I
call it an adult Disneyworld. I’ve performed at Planet Hollywood Resort &
Casino with the other finalists of the fourth season of “America’s Got Talent”
in 2009. I’ve played Palace Station and The Orleans and loved performing at
those hotels. I’m now looking forward to The Rio.”
Grandma
Lee reminisced, “I always wanted to make people laugh and that’s why I got into
standup comedy. I’m getting ready to do a weekend gig in South Carolina. I’ve
even played MGM’s Foxwoods. I’ve lived in Jacksonville since 1992 but when I go
to Las Vegas I will try to stay out of the heat. Fortunately it’s a dry heat
not like Florida which is known for its’ humidity. I hate the rain so I like
Las Vegas.”
Grandma
Lee said, “I never have performed on cruise ships. I’m a land lover I guess.
When I played LA a couple of years ago I tripped backstage and broke my hip, my
shoulder and a rib. I was hospitalized for eight days. There was a long
recovery period. I had to go to rehab.”
She
said, “”America’s Got Talent” really gave me a boost in my career so that I’m a
household name. I’ve played every state except Hawaii, Montana, New Jersey and
Oregon. The judges said they loved my timing.”
Grandma
Lee will open on Thursday, May 31st at 7 p.m. Thursdays thru Sundays and
perform her standup comedy in The King’s Room. Tickets can be purchased at the
Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino Box-Office at (702) 777-7776 or go to
kingsroomlv.com.
The
comedian was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She married a Marine and reared
four children. In May, 1995 her husband Ben Strong passed away from cancer. She
then attended a comedy workshop to get her start as a comedian. Her show is
G-rated. She said, “I won’t say a cuss word.” Her sassy and quick-witted sense
of humor has gained her notoriety. The material she used on the show included
