The Las Vegas
Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities held its second annual Laps for
Charity event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, Jan. 29 and raised more
than $32,000 for local children’s causes.
Auto enthusiasts were offered the unique opportunity
to drive their personal vehicles around the superspeedway at speeds up to 75
miles per hour (behind a pace car) and 729 cars – everything from antique Model
Ts to an 18-wheeler tractor – were entered in the event. In addition, 130
drivers chose to pay for a repeat run, driving the total to 859 (up from 750 in
2011).
Sunday’s high-speed
charity drive surpassed the inaugural event by more than $8,000. All proceeds from Laps for Charity will
benefit the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities. Making a
difference in a child's life is the focus of Speedway Children's Charities. SCC
strives to do this in collaboration with the non-profit organizations it
supports nationwide.
Individually, SCC's
local chapters identify the needs of children in their communities and award
grants to organizations that address them. Last December, the Las Vegas Chapter
of Speedway Children's Charities granted $260,000 to 46 local children's causes
during its annual grant distribution ceremony.
