Celebrated rhythm
and blues, soul and funk acts from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s will perform some of
their best-loved hits at 105.7 The Oasis Valentine’s Love Affair at the Orleans
Arena on Saturday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m.
Performing at this
year’s event are The Manhattans, Heatwave, GQ, The Moments, Billy Paul, Gene
Chandler, Barbara Mason, El Chicano and Ray, Goodman & Brown.
The Manhattans are
perhaps best-known for their most popular love songs, including “Shining Star”
and their No.1 hit from 1976, “Kiss and Say Good-Bye.”
Funk/disco band
Heatwave had three hit songs in the ‘70s: “Boogie Nights,” “Always and Forever”
and “The Groove Line.”
In 1979, GQ charted
two Top 10 R&B and Top 20 pop hits, including the No. 1 R&B single,
“Disco Nights (Rock-Freak).”
The Moments released
more than 30 singles from the late ‘60s to the early ‘80s and are best-known for
the hit songs “Love on a Two Way Street,” “Sexy Mama” and “Look at Me (I’m in
Love).”
In 1973, Billy Paul
won the Grammy® Award for “Best Male R&B Vocal Performance” for his hit
song, “Me and Mrs. Jones.”
Gene “The Duke”
Chandler’s is widely recognized for his hit single, “Duke of Earl,” which was
inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame in 2002.
Singer-songwriter
Barbara Mason’s 1965 hit “Yes, I’m Ready” reached the top ten on the R&B
and pop charts and was followed up with two other hits, “Sad, Sad Girl” and “Oh
How It Hurts.”
El Chicano’s first
hit, “Viva Tirado,” was a jazzy-soul rendition of Gerald William’s original
song about a bullfighter and was followed up with another hit, “Tell Her She’s
Lovely.”
Formed in the
mid-1960s, Ray, Goodman & Brown is best-known for the 1980 hit, “Special
Lady,” which reached No. 1 on the R&B chart early that year.
