“The Dixie Evans Burlesque Show” Celebrated the Best of Burlesque’s Past & Present at The Plaza Hotel & Casino
The inaugural “Dixie Evans Burlesque Show Weekend” made Las Vegas history inside the Copa room at the Plaza Hotel & Casino June 3-4, 2011 with the introduction of a new kind of entertainment to Las Vegas and the long-awaited return to the stage of burlesque icon Dixie Evans. Dubbed “The Marilyn Monroe of Burlesque” by Harold Minsky, no one has done more to preserve the history and art of burlesque than Evans.
“I wanted to pay homage to the type of show found in the old burlesque clubs with a variety of entertainment,” said Dixie Evans. “By working with Frederic Apcar Productions, we did a wonderful job recreating that, and many of the girls have already asked me to perform again next year.”
Friday night’s event kicked off with the Las Vegas debut of Kaiju’s “Big Battel,” (http://kaiju.com), where live monsters battled for supremacy over a cityscape of the Las Vegas Strip in a modern conflict of epic proportions. A bevy of burlesque beauties then took to the stage for a competition. Italian beauty Dixie Ramone, who did her performance with a candelabra and lit candles balanced on her head, was crowned the winner and received $1,000 cash and $2,500 in prizes including a coveted spot performing at The New York Burlesque Fest 2011, four nights’ hotel accommodations at the newly remodeled Plaza Hotel & Casino, a private instruction from Dixie Evans and more. Other highlights of the evening included Zamora the Torture King, DJ Howie Pyro and the Fuse Dancers, and when a full-length black mink coat was auctioned off, raising a $400 donation to Evans.
Saturday’s show featured comedy and magic with an all-star lineup of burlesque’s past and present including: performer and co-host Foxy Tann; Vegas’ own Vi Vacious; Magic Nerd Kyle Marlett; Shannon Doah, drag superstar Delorian Chase; Daisy Delight, Lucy Fur, co-hosts and Baggy Pants comedic duo Doc & Stumpy, Bizzaro The Optical Illusionist; Angie Pontani; Tempest Storm, who dazzled during a special Q&A; Dixie Evans, who performed a strip skit revealing a red bra; Kitten DeVille, and Satan’s Angel, who brought down the house with her famous flaming tassels. Dixie Ramone reprised her winning performance to close the show.
