Local Fave Globe Salon Is Having A Birthday Party! On 10/15!

On Saturday, October 15, 2016, from 6–9pm, the public is invited to join the Globe Salon family at Tenaya Creek Brewery (831 West Bonanza Rd, 702-362-7335). The award-winning, locally-owned hair salon will be celebrating a unique "half-life" anniversary, having been open 16 years, eight of them in downtown.

Globe Salon opened in 2000, and relocated to Downtown in 2008. Tenaya Creek Brewery was selected as the host location partially due to its similar story. Opened in 1999 in the northwest suburbs of Las Vegas, for 16 years Tenaya Creek built a reputation as a wonderful place to enjoy locally-brewed beer. Then, just as Downtown Las Vegas began to revitalize, the craft beer scene exploded nationwide. Tenaya Creek saw the future, and in 2015 relocated to a beautiful brewing facility in a remodeled and retrofitted historic Downtown building.

"As a successful Las Vegas business that also made the leap to Downtown, Tenaya Creek and Globe Salon share a kindred spirit," says Salon Director and company president Staci Linklater. “We want to welcome Tenaya Creek as another important piece of the ongoing Downtown renaissance. There’s no better way to do that than to share our success with them.”

Jessica Manolo, named one of Las Vegas Weekly's "10 Acts to Watch in 2016", will perform at Tenaya Creek from 6-7pm, and all attendees to the Globe Salon celebration will enjoy a specially-priced selection of craft beer and wine, delicious complimentary samples from Downtown's Art of Flavors Gelato., and a complimentary food setup from the Rolling Fusion food truck (while supply lasts). There will also be a charity raffle benefitting the Rape Crisis Center featuring impressive gifts from local businesses.

Globe Salon just finished an anniversary editorial photo shoot with Square Shooting Photography, L Makeup Institute, and stylist KT Moss. The event will showcase an exhibit of those photos, and they are available for publishing consideration.

Globe Salon, owned and operated by two Las Vegas natives, opened in October 2000, and built a new location in the Arts District’s Soho Lofts building in July 2008. About to enter its 17th year serving Southern Nevada, the salon has been recognized as exceptional via numerous awards, articles and recognition by local and national press, including:

• A Top 100 Salon in America -- Elle Magazine
• A Salon of the Year -- Salon Today
• Salon Today Top 200 -- Salon Today
• Best Salon -- Desert Companion Readers Awards
• Best Salon -- CitySearch Audience Winner
• Best Salon -- Las Vegas Nightie Awards
• Best Salon -- Las Vegas Weekly Readers Choice Awards

Globe Salon is located at 900 Las Vegas Blvd South, Suite 130,  in the SoHo Lofts in the Las Vegas Arts District. The telephone number is 702-938-4247.

Popular Exhibit Of 1st Officer Murdoch Items Extended At Titanic Exhibit

Murdoch Pipe
Due to popular demand, six personal effects belonging to RMS Titanic’s First Officer William Murdoch will be on display for an extended period of time at Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition inside Luxor Hotel and Casino through Nov. 15, 2016. The rare artifacts, which were brought in for a limited-time engagement on Sept. 1, the 31st anniversary of the discovery of Titanic’s wreck site, will travel to the Orlando Exhibition following their continued stay in Las Vegas. Murdoch’s recovered items include a toiletry kit, which contained a shoe brush, an official White Star Line button, a straight razor, a pair of long-johns and a smoking pipe.

“All artifacts recovered from the Titanic’s wreck site are noteworthy, but the discovery of Murdoch’s items is especially significant as he is one of eight passengers and crew members whom we were able to directly link personal possessions to thus far,” said Alexandra Klingelhofer, vice president of collections for Premier Exhibitions, Inc. “We are pleased to extend this special display in Las Vegas in an effort to bring more people face-to-face with treasures that belonged to a man so vital to the story of Titanic.”

First Officer Murdoch was on the bridge when the “Unsinkable Ship” collided with the iceberg that fateful night on April 15, 1912. As soon as the lookouts spotted the iceberg, Murdoch gave the order “Hard-a-starboard!” and telegraphed the engine room “Stop. Full speed astern.” Once the situation was realized, Murdoch spent the remainder of his time assisting passengers into lifeboats and went down with the Ship.

Some of the following clues that link the artifacts directly to Murdoch include:
·         Toiletry Kit: William Murdoch’s initials, “W.M.” are clearly embossed on the leather bag.
·         White Star Line Officer Button: Officers were given uniforms, but needed to purchase their own buttons, making easily-accessible spares necessary.
·         Straight Razor: For many years, Murdoch sported a mustache, but with marriage and entrance into the Royal Navy Reserve, he shaved it off.
·         Long-Johns: Officers and crew members had multiple pairs of long-johns, which would have been necessary for Murdoch’s frigid overnight shifts.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition takes guests on an emotional journey through the life of the legendary ship. Along the way, visitors learn countless stories of heroism and humanity, paying tribute to the indomitable force of the human spirit in the face tragedy. Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. with the last admission at 9 p.m. For more information and ticket prices, please visit www.premierexhibitions.com.

Comedian Don Rickles Brings His Warm Fuzzy Humor To The Orleans Showroom

Returning for his 57th consecutive year as a Las Vegas headliner, internationally distinguished comedian, actor and entertainer Don Rickles will perform at The Orleans Showroom on Oct. 22 and 23.

Frequently known by the nicknames “The Merchant of Venom” and “Mr. Warmth,” Rickles’ style of comedy is never mean-spirited and all part of his act. It has been said that being “zinged” by Rickles is like “wearing a badge of honor.”

Rickles took his first step toward national fame in 1957, when he spotted Frank Sinatra in the audience at a nightclub in Miami Beach. The still-unknown Rickles eyed Sinatra and said, “I just saw your movie, ‘The Pride and the Passion,’ and I want to tell you, the cannon was great. Make yourself at home, Frank. Hit somebody.” Sinatra, whose pet name for Rickles was “bullet-head,” enjoyed Rickles so much that he returned to see him when he was performing in Los Angeles, and encouraged other celebrities to see his act. Rickles soon became the “in” comic among Hollywood stars, who flocked to see him to become a target of his insults. Sinatra’s continuing support helped Rickles become a popular performer in Las Vegas, where he first started in 1959, and has been a headliner ever since.

Shortly after being discovered by Sinatra, Rickles made his acting debut in 1958’s “Run Silent Run Deep.”  The movie was a hit, launching Rickles’ career as a movie, television and stage actor.  His still-growing television and film resume includes roles in “Casino,” “Kelly’s Heroes,” “The Rat Race,” all three “Toy Story” films, HBO’s “Tales From the Crypt,” and Bravo’s “My Life on the D-List” with Kathy Griffin. In 2011, he made a surprise appearance in a “cliff-hanger” episode as the “thought-to-be-dead” husband of Betty White’s character on the TV Land comedy “Hot In Cleveland,” with a follow-up appearance later in the season. In 2000, Rickles received one of the highest honors in the entertainment business when he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Rickles has received two Primetime Emmy Awards, including Best Individual Performance in a Variety or Musical for the 2008 HBO special “Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project.” In 2009, TV Land honored Rickles with the “Legend Award.” Rickles’ best-selling memoir “Rickles’ Book” was released in 2007, followed by the 2008 title, “Rickles’ Letters.”

In spring 2012, Rickles joined David Letterman as one of the only two performers to receive the prestigious “Johnny Carson Award for Comedic Excellence” at The Comedy Awards, aired on Comedy Central. The award was presented to Rickles by Jon Stewart and Robert DeNiro. In June 2013, Rickles was honored with the Friars Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Comedy at a star-studded awards gala at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. Among those participating in honoring Rickles through their songs or words were Lewis Black, Louis C.K., Natalie Cole, Bob Costas, Tony Danza, Robert DeNiro, Kathy Griffin, Diana Krall, John Mayer, Bob Newhart, Regis Philbin, Joan Rivers, Bob Saget and John Stamos.

The honors continued when a star-studded cast honored Rickles on SPIKE TV’s “One Night Only: An All-Star Comedy Tribute to Don Rickles” in May 2014. The two-hour special was taped in New York City, Rickles’ hometown, and includes stand-up performances, short films, pre-taped tributes and personal stories as told by Rickles' closest friends, his co-stars and other comedians he has influenced. The event featured celebrities from the world of comedy, television and the silver screen including Robert DeNiro, Johnny Depp, Tina Fey, Brad Garrett, Jimmy Kimmel, David Letterman, Tracy Morgan, Eddie Murphy, Bob Newhart, Regis Philbin, Amy Poehler, Ray Romano, Martin Scorsese, Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart and Brian Williams.

In addition to recurring dates in Las Vegas at The Orleans, Rickles continues to be a popular performer in venues throughout the country.

Showtime each evening is 8 p.m. Tickets start at $69.95, plus tax and convenience fees, and can be purchased at any Boyd Gaming Box Office, by calling 702.284.7777, or visiting www.orleanscasino.com.

Towbin Motorcars Brings New Luxury Car Dealerships To LV!

Ferrari
Maserati
Towbin Motorcars is continuing to drive the luxury car market forward in the Las Vegas Valley with the announcement of Ferrari • Maserati of Las Vegas, set to break ground on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 5550 W. Sahara Ave.

“With Ferrari and Maserati now among our luxury automotive offerings, we are thrilled to build a showroom that represents the style and sophistication of Italian motorcar enthusiasts,” said Carolynn Towbin, chairman/dealer principal of Towbin Automotive Enterprises and the first female dealer of a Ferrari and Maserati dealership in North America, along with her partner and daughter, Jesika Towbin-Mansour.

Towbin Motorcars acquired the former Penske Wynn Ferrari/Maserati dealership, located at Wynn Las Vegas, in late 2015 and added the automobiles to its existing world-class portfolio, which includes Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Aston Martin. The new Ferrari • Maserati of Las Vegas will join Towbin Motorcars’ existing 45,000-square-foot showroom, which opened in 2012, to become the biggest ultra-luxury/exotic automobile complex in Nevada. “The design of the entire complex will feel very European,” said Towbin-Mansour. “Our existing showroom offers the refinement of British elegance, and the new Ferrari and Maserati showroom will embody sleek Italian style. It really transports people as part of the purchasing experience.”  Part of creating that experience is an arduous training process, which includes national and international travel to gain extensive knowledge about Ferrari and Maserati automobiles.

The new 10,000-square-foot space will highlight state-of-the-art technology and contemporary design to embrace the world-renowned reputation of its automobiles. Ferrari • Maserati of Las Vegas will offer an eye-catching view of the luxury automobiles on display, situated just a few feet away from Sahara Avenue.

“The placement of the showroom, right off of the street, will be very metropolitan in design,” said Rony Mansour, general manager of Towbin Motorcars and Ferrari • Maserati of Las Vegas. “Like a showroom in New York or San Francisco, passers-by will be able to get a glimpse of the latest Ferrari and Maserati models, which will be strikingly displayed.”

Ferrari • Maserati of Las Vegas is designed by Italy’s Fortebis Group in conjunction with local architecture firm, Ware Malcomb Phoenix, and will house luxurious furnishings and fixtures imported directly from Europe. The structural engineers for the project are CTS Consulting Structural Engineers, and the MPE engineers are Peterson & Associates, Inc. The landscape architect is Studio DPA and civil engineer is Lochsa Engineering. The showroom is being constructed by Boyd Martin Construction and the construction manager is Cresa Phoenix. Towbin is the only licensed Ferrari and Maserati dealership in Nevada.

A grand opening is projected for the summer of 2017. More information may be found by visiting www.ferrarimaseratioflasvegas.com or calling 702.659.6600.
