Help Support Women & Children In Need! Safe Nest Luncheon Coming Up

With at least one in every three women having been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime, it’s time to rethink the pink this October and support locally-based Safe Nest and bring recognition to Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Serving approximately 50,000 people annually, Safe Nest is the primary provider of domestic violence services in Southern Nevada, is the only agency with access for 24/7 Emergency Temporary Protection Orders and has the largest, most comprehensive program for the entire state.  Throughout the month of October, Safe Nest offers a variety of ways to show your support and shed some light on such an important issue including the Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month Luncheon on Friday, Oct. 14 from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino – Brasilia Room.

Celebrating its 33rd year, the Safe Nest Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month Luncheon honors those who have died due to domestic violence, celebrates those who have survived, and connects those who strive to put an end to the violence.  The annual luncheon features a Keynote Address by MonaLou Callery from the National Advocacy & Training Network SEEDs Program.  Developed in 2003, SEEDs (Support, Education, Empowerment & DirectionS) addresses the unmet needs of battered and sexually abused women by providing them a community-based, safe, sober living environment committed to the physical, mental, and emotional healing of women whose lives have been affected by substance abuse and violence.  In addition to Callery, The Women’s Health Care Associates of Nevada will be recognized for a $10,000 donation to Safe Nest.  Guests of the luncheon can also be inspired by a survivor speaker and bid on a variety of silent auction items to benefit the organization.

In addition to the annual luncheon, community members can show their support through a variety of other activities in Las Vegas and Henderson including:

Oct. 4 at Dusk                     Purple lighting of Container Park dome
Oct. 6 at 10 a.m.                 Annual Domestic Violence Memorial at LVMPD (400 S. MLK Blvd.)
Oct. 7 6 – 9 p.m.                 Domestic Violence Awareness Month Art Showcase at Nest Studio (1800 S. Industrial Blvd.)

Las Vegans can also support Safe Nest while getting their daily dose of greens at Fruits & Roots Organic Juice Bar and Wellness Kitchen.  For the month of October, Fruits & Roots will donate 10 percent of “Cosmic Greens” to Safe Nest.  Developed locally by owner Patricia Kaytia as an homage to the late holistic healer Dr. Max Gerson, “Cosmic Greens” is purple to represent the color associated with domestic violence and contains purple cabbage, apple, green chard, bell pepper, watercress, romaine, lemon, and ginger.  “Cosmic Greens” is located at their southwest area location only at 7885 W. Sunset Rd.

People are also urged to bring general awareness to the problem of domestic violence by changing text and email colors to purple beginning Oct. 16 and wearing purple (from shirts to jewelry to hair) throughout the last week of the month.

A problem that impacts the safety and well-being of individuals, families and communities throughout Southern Nevada, domestic violence can take on multiple forms including physical, emotional and sexual abuse, financial control and social isolation.  It affects all communities, regardless of socioeconomic status, race or religion.  Safe Nest serves battered women (or men), children or teens affected by family violence, adolescents in violent dating relationships, offending partners, family member or significant others impacted by the violence, at-risk individuals, and the community at large by offering a variety of programming and services including counseling, crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, residential services, protection order assistance and employment/life-skill classes.  Safe Nest aims to put a stop to all immediate abuse and break the cycle of abuse for generations to come.

Established in 1977, Safe Nest is Nevada’s largest and most comprehensive non-profit agency devoted solely to domestic violence issues.  Serving approximately 50,000 people annually, Safe Nest’s programs include a 24-hour confidential shelter, a 24-hour hotline and protection order services, counseling, advocacy, court assistance, and prevention education.  For more information, please call 702-877-0133 or visit www.safenest.org.

It Was A "The Killers" Celebration At Sam's Town For 10th Anniversary

On September 30th and October 1st, The Killers and fans took over the Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their sophomore album Sam's Town.  On both Friday and Saturday, fans gambled on Sam's Town themed blackjack tables with custom chips and indulged in specialty meals and cocktails inspired by the band's hits, all while listening to a curated playlist of Killers' songs pumping throughout the hotel and casino for the two day extravaganza.  The crowd went wild and sang every word during The Killers' dynamic live shows each night: an intimate two-song acoustic set poolside at sunset, followed later by a full performance of Sam's Town, along with other hits from the band's celebrated catalogue in the Sam's Town Live! venue.

100% of the proceeds from the Extravaganza benefitted Las Vegas charities Toni's House and First Friday Foundation, which support recovery for the homeless and those struggling with addiction and bring arts and culture initiatives to underserved communities.

Sam's Town producer Alan Moulder (Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins) flew in for the festivities, which also included the opportunity for fans to dive into the band's musical history with a two-hour bus tour of The Killers' Las Vegas that wound through band members' old haunts, locations of The Killers' first shows and their Battle Born Studios headquarters.

The Killers' vinyl re-issue of Sam's Town will be available for purchase this Friday, October 7th via Bong Load Records. One of the two bonus tracks featured on the re-issue, the never before released Sam's Town era demo "Peace of Mind," will be available as a digital single on all digital stores and streaming partners on October 7th.

The Killers released Sam's Town in 2006 - a heartfelt love letter to their hometown that was an RIAA platinum hit upon release, spent 42 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 and spawned hit singles "When You Were Young" (which was nominated for two Grammy awards) and "Read My Mind." Sam's Town has now sold over 5.5 million copies.

The Killers consists of Brandon Flowers (vocals/keyboards), Dave Keuning (guitars), Mark Stoermer (bass) and Ronnie Vannucci (drums).

Take The Inerno Curry Challenge At Mint Indian Bistro!

Mint Indian Bistro, a full-service Indian restaurant with a unique approach, is hosting its Third Annual Inferno Curry Challenge Month in October. This year the chef will use two additional extreme peppers: the Carolina Reaper, which with its origins in South Carolina, has earned the status of the world’s hottest pepper by the Guinness Book of World Records, as well as the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion chili, a close second in the heat index.

Each year, from October 1-31, anyone who dares to attempt and finish Mint Indian Bistro’s signature Inferno Curry receives the most coveted spot on Mint Indian Bistro’s Wall of Flame. In addition, they also receive a $50 Mint Indian Bistro gift card as well as an entry into a drawing for complimentary dinner entrées for a year (one per month, 12 entrées total).

This year will be no different, except the heat has gone up by 1 million SHU units, with the hottest pepper at a scorching 2.2 million SHU.

When first launched in 2014, food critic and writer John Curtas of Eating Las Vegas, called it the hottest dish in Las Vegas.

At 1,041,427 SHU, the Ghost Pepper was the hottest pepper in the challenge up until last year.

“The Ghost pepper is so hot, our chefs wear a mask when they cook it,” owner of Mint Indian Bistro, Kris Parikh said. “With the Carolina Reaper and the Trinidad Moruga, the challenge has gone to a totally different level.”

Since the opening of Mint Indian Bistro in 2008, more than 2,000 guests have attempted finishing the Inferno Curry, yet only 32 guests have successfully done it.

“2016 is a very special year for us as we open our newest location in the southwest of Las Vegas. We’re working on providing diners with an experience never before seen or heard in an Indian restaurant. We are taking customer experience to the next level and decided to do the same with our food challenge. So we introduced two more peppers that have an SHU higher than even the Ghost Pepper,” Kris said.

With Mint’s second location slated to open sometime in October, there is also the coveted spot of being the first at their newest location to enter the Wall of Flame.

“Our Inferno Curry is not for the faint at heart. It is marinated with the hottest chilies in the world, and this year the heat is up substantially. If you have ever taken on our challenge in the past, you know it is insanely hot, “ Kris said. “This year, with the addition of two of the hottest peppers in the world, the challenge is really going to test your spice tolerance at the next level.”

“We use natural chilies, not extracts, so I always warn my guests to try it at their own risk,” he added.

To order the Inferno Curry dish, you must sign a waiver. The inferno Curry is served from 4 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily. The curry is made with fresh veggies ($17.99), chicken thigh ($18.99), or boneless lamb ($19.99).

Mint Indian Bistro does not just serve spicy cuisine. The Inferno dishes are just a part of the menu. In fact, the whole concept of the menu is based on the fact that no matter what dietary philosophy you follow, Mint Indian Bistro has something for everyone.

“We, therefore, cater to special diet groups like vegetarians and vegans. We also serve Halal meat and gluten-free delicacies,” Kris said.

So whether you like your curry mild, hot, extremely hot, or 'inferno-style,' they will custom-make it to your individual taste.

“We all know our spice tolerance; and at Mint Indian Bistro, we personalize the spice level to your liking. We can tone it down to zero or switch it up all the way to inferno,” Kris said.

Mint Indian Bistro has received numerous top honors and accolades from sources including Open Table, Trip Advisor and the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Best of Las Vegas Reader’s Poll.  In addition, Mint has received several rave media reviews.

Mint Indian Bistro in Las Vegas, Nevada, is a full-service Indian restaurant with a truly contemporary twist in its food, its décor, and its approach. Located just off of the famous Las Vegas Strip, Mint Indian Bistro’s food mantra is simple, fresh, flavorful and colorful food that appeals to all five senses. Mint is located at 730 E. Flamingo, Suite 10.
