Driving School B.R.A.K.E.S. Has Upcoming Sessions with Drag Racing Champion Doug Herbert

For the first time in its 15-year history, the B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe) national teen pro-active driving school founded by multi-time Top Fuel drag racing champion Doug Herbert will hold training sessions in Las Vegas.

Taking place on October 7 and 8 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the free program features hands-on instruction in distracted driving awareness, panic braking, drop-wheel/off-road recovery, crash avoidance and car control/skid recovery – all the biggest causes of crashes for new drivers.

Each session features three hours of training, starting with a classroom presentation followed by extensive instruction behind the wheel of brand-new vehicles from the Kia lineup. To register, please visit www.putonthebrakes.org.

Established in 2008 following a tragic car crash that claimed the lives of Herbert’s sons Jon and James, the GuideStar Platinum-rated 501(c)(3) addresses a leading cause of death among teens – car crashes – helping to improve road safety and prevent other parents from facing the heartbreaking loss of a child. To date, B.R.A.K.E.S. has trained more than 110,000 teens and their parents, saving countless lives and making U.S. roadways safer.

Through their participation in the pro-active defensive driving program, B.R.A.K.E.S. graduates are 64 percent less likely to get in a crash within their first three years of driving, according to an independent study conducted by Dr. Paul Friday of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

The weekend in Las Vegas is among the many first-ever visits to new locations for B.R.A.K.E.S. in 2023, aligning with the program’s goal of hosting an unprecedented number of training sessions throughout the U.S. in 2023.

In addition to Nevada, B.R.A.K.E.S. will visit new locations in Kentucky, and Texas this year, while having already completed its first-ever training in Nebraska in August. The program also returns to popular venues in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Expansion of the life-saving program has been facilitated by three fleets of 22 all-new vehicles provided by Kia. This includes popular models Carnival, Forte, Niro, Rio, Seltos, Sorento, Sportage, Soul and Telluride.

 Remember roller skating and disco? What about hot summer nights listening to Donna Summer and Tina Turner's songs? Step back in time and groove along with these FANTASTIC “Disco Divas!

The iconic Cher puts in an appearance as does the perky and bubbly Olivia Newton-John. The new show is currently running at the Alexis Park Showroom and it is sure to take you back to “Last Dance”, “Let’s Get Physical” “I Feel Love” and “Do You Believe.”  “Rolling on the River” energized the audience and the audience LOVED it! 

These ladies know how to perform and their voices match our beloved Disco Divas perfectly. The showroom is intimate and all the seats offer great views of the stage. This show is fun, glitzy, and feels good!

During sets, TVs are set up by the stage and display iconic commercials and other fun remembrances from the 70’s. So Many Dining Choices In Vegas! Choose & Enjoy SOL Mexican Cocina's Baja-Inspired FRESH Dishes!

 

Las Vegas in the summer! Hot nights and sweltering days. This year we have had a cool spell, and as I sit here writing this, the temperature is hovering around 93 degrees! However, it is never too hot or cold for fantastic yummy Mexican food and Margaritas!

Have you had a chance to visit the authentic Baja-inspired Mexican restaurant SOL Mexican Cocina at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace? If not, absolutely put it on a list of places to grab lunch or dinner. This restaurant has a diverse and eclectic menu with Mexican favorites that are prepared with the freshest ingredients and care by Chef Justin Willams.

Let’s start with the appetizers! They have the absolute tastiest and tenderest Calamari that I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Sometimes Calamari can be hit or miss. Not at SOL! They prepare this dish differently, it is done in long “planks” and then breaded with finely ground Panko crumbs and then rolled in coconut flakes. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Bursting with flavor and be sure and dip away with the spicy dipping sauce, which is not too hot but has enough bite to let you know it is there on your taste buds. We also decided to try a true favorite which is the Grilled Sweet Corn. This is prepared with butter, lime, chiles, cotija cheese, chipotle drizzle & scallions and is unwrapped tableside. Another not to miss dish! Tasty and hot, just the way it should be!  

Short Ribs

Moving on to the main course, which by this time I was wondering, will I be able to dig into? Well, I was game and decided upon the Short Ribs, which are ‘Barbacoa slow-cooked short ribs, with chiles, guacamole, cotija cheese, sweet potato, onions & cilantro the answer is a resounding YES!! Tender and flavorful, the meat could be cut with a spoon. The beans and rice were very fresh and flavorful, seasoned correctly, and moist.

Beet & Watermelon Salad

This one is amazing if you decide to eat lightly or want to share a salad. The Beet & Watermelon Salad has roasted beets, watermelon cubes, arugula, and red onion, and is tossed with queso fresco, pepita ‘brittle’ & citrus vinaigrette. Arugula is a favorite of mine, but adding the beet and watermelon? Genius. 

Grande Casa Noble Margarita

What would a Mexican meal be without Margaritas? At SOL they have traditional and some not-too-traditional choices. While waiting for my dining partner I had the Watermelon Margarita with Herradura silver, muddled watermelon & lime juice. Perfect for winding down after a long day spent in front of the computer. At the table, we opted to try the Grande Casa Noble Margarita made with  Casa Noble reposado, shaken tableside, and you have your choice of housemade sour mix, or you can make it a skinny margarita. There was not anything skinny about this dining experience so we went with the housemade sour mix. Another fresh delicious drink!! Could have drunk them forever, but had to drive.

 Tres Leches Cake & Blondie Desserts

Finishing off the meal with dessert was a challenge! It was a challenge to figure out where would I tuck it in and what to choose. We chose the Tres Leches Cake, a white cake flavored with vanilla & toasted coconut. This is a Mexican specialty cake that when it is made correctly will send you to heaven. Yes, that is exactly what happened! After one bite of this moist delicious cake infused with vanilla, it was hard not to finish it off! We also decided to try the Blondie, which is a  ‘blondie’ brownie with white chocolate, pecans, vanilla ice cream & cajeta envinada. Side note, what is Cajeta Envinada? “Envinada” refers to adding wine to the mix. Cajeta is a type of caramel. Though caramel has a varied and shrouded history in the Americas, one thing is certain: cajeta is a quintessentially Mexican dessert.  I really feel that whichever dessert you choose you cannot make a bad choice. As a matter of fact, with all of the food on the menu at SOL Mexican Cocina, you will be happy satisfied, and full.  

Happy Hour is available in the Cantina on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 3 pm - 6 pm. They have  House Margaritas (Frozen or on the Rocks), Skinny Organic Margaritas, and my favorite, the Watermelon Margarita. Also available are Beers, House Wine (Red or White.) At SOL Mexican Cocina Tuesdays are Taco & Tequila time! On the menu (in the cantina) the food available is quite diverse and will have something for everyone in your party, including tacos. Take a look at the website for Brunch options!

Parking is so very easy. Simply use the side valet off of Las Vegas Blvd. The service in the restaurant is wonderful and everyone from the bartenders to the wait staff are very welcoming and are available to answer any of your questions. Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart welcomes earthicans 21 and older for two special upcoming Night Shifts during AREA15’s Secret Garden.

These special Overtime Night Shifts will feature the usual chance to explore portals and pours for those old enough to legally sip alcohol in Las Vegas, Earth. Visitors can explore the store, Juke Temple, Dream Jungle and all the worlds in a grown-up dimension with cocktail in hand from one of several remote cocktail spots, all while grooving, for the first time, to the sounds of in-world DJs.

You Can Make A Difference! Help Needed to Rebuild Critical Animal Rescue Operation!!

Since 2001, Isla Animals Rescue has worked tirelessly to rescue and sterilize street dogs and cats on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, offering vital free and reduced cost services to a community that desperately needs them.
 
“Isla Animals is the REAL thing,” said founder Alison Sawyer. “Nobody’s being paid for administration; no one’s going to lunch or staying in five-star hotels. All the money goes to the animals. No one is making any kind of profit.”
 
But in April, the brave efforts of Isla Animals Rescue were upended by the government of Isla Mujeres, which reclaimed the space inhabited by Isla Animals, leaving the rescue organization homeless like the abandoned animals they work so diligently to protect.
 
In spite of the unthinkable setback, Sawyer and the organization’s director, Trina Noakes, remained steadfast in their commitment to taking animals off the streets.
 
“Twenty-two years and tens of thousands of dogs and cats saved — passion, sweat and tears — all of that will not be thrown away at the whim of an ungrateful government that doesn’t appreciate how we have taken care of their problem,” said Sawyer, who still buys her clothes at the Salvation Army so she can put everything she has into helping the animals.
 
After taking a step back to rethink and regroup, the organization decided that moving to the mainland, Cancun, will offer them the best chance of building an optimal shelter — that they will own independently — and that will have an impact where it is needed most. The new shelter will meet international standards for water, sewage, electricity — and they’re going to try to get solar power as well.
 
“The need on the mainland is much greater than on Isla, with extreme cases of abandonment and abuse and a much higher number of street animals,” said Noakes. “Not only will IA have something that no one can take away from the animals, but we will also have outdoor space, a place for on-site surgeries, isolation areas and a lot more!”
 
But the move comes at an immense cost that Isla Animals can’t tackle alone.
 
“Since we didn’t plan to go through all of this, we are struggling financially,” Noakes added.
“Building is expensive, and we know we can use your money better building on the mainland.”

Pool Party Time At Swim & Social At The STRAT Hotel, Casino & Sky Pod

 

The STRAT Hotel, Casino & SkyPod welcomed guests to celebrate the grand opening of Swim & Social, the property’s picturesque new destination to sip, swim and socialize. Set to the elevated backdrop of the Las Vegas Strip, the event showcased small bites and cocktails from Swim & Social Café, as well as live entertainment and games. 

Stephen Thayer, vice president and general manager of The STRAT Hotel, Casino & SkyPod, welcomed guests to the celebration, which included Councilmembers Oliva Diaz and Cedric Crear, among others. Thayer led the Las Vegas dignitaries in a celebratory ribbon cutting ceremony, set in front of the main pool.   

The celebration included a surprise “Splash Mob,” featuring a performance by Uzeyer Novruzov, a talented ladder acrobat from season 10 of America’s Got Talent. Novruzov initiated the “Splash Mob” routine by knocking a performer into the pool, after which a group of synchronized swimmers entertained guests.

 

Blue Hawaiian 

A sampling of small dishes and cocktails from the destination’s full-service restaurant and bar, Swim & Social Café, included shrimp ceviche, chicken teriyaki skewers and ahi tuna tacos, as well as Peach Party, S&S Favorite and Blue Hawaiian cocktails. The ultimate party band, Yacht & Roll, provided the soundtrack for the event, while games like cornhole, giant Jenga and Connect Four welcomed friendly competition and poolside socializing.

REVOLUTIONARY Product Roll-Out For Nevada's 1st Solventless Cannabis Brand

 Ground-breaking design of the new CAMP Disposable 3.0 features a wickless ceramic bucket.

CAMP, Nevada’s first solventless cannabis brand, will unveil a revolutionary solventless rosin disposable designed to elevate discrete dabbing experiences to the next level: the CAMP Disposable 3.0.
