Notorious Criminal "Whitey Bulger" Exhibits Now At Mob Museum!!

When planning began for an exhibit featuring alleged crime figures on the lam for The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, among  those originally slated  for inclusion was notorious gangster-turned-FBI-informant James “Whitey” Bulger. By the time the Museum opened its doors on Valentine’s Day 2012, exhibits featuring Bulger had to be altered to account for his 2011 arrest. With Bulger’s trial under way in Boston, guests of the Mob Museum are flocking to these exhibits seeking to understand the man’s role in organized crime, which allegedly includes 19 murders in the 70s and 80s.

Bulger is featured in several places throughout the Museum, including:

-Mention in death of innocent victim in “Mob’s Greatest Hits” on second floor.

-Mention in disappearance of women in “Missing” on second floor.

-Video feature that plays at entry of  “Too Early for Obituaries” on the first floor.

-Graphic displaying copy of wanted poster of young Bulger in the line-up room third floor.

-Panel featuring him in 100 years of Made Men Wall on the first floor.

-Two original wanted posters from the FBI in “Bringing Down the Mob” on the first floor.

Says journalist and author Beverly Ford, who, along with co-author Stephanie Schorow, will appear at the Museum Aug. 16-17 to discuss their book, “The Boston Mob Guide: Hit Men, Hoodlums and Hideouts”: “Bulger is one of the more notorious mobsters alive today. His ongoing trial serves as a reminder that the damage wrought by organized crime is not a thing of the remote past; it continues to impact lives.”

Ford is currently covering the Bulger trial in Boston for the New York Daily News.

Bulger’s story began in Boston where he was originally depicted by the local media as a Robin Hood-esque bandit dedicated to protecting his neighborhood and its residents. In reality he was, according to authorities, creating a protection racket targeting drug kingpins and those running illegal gaming operations. By 1975, he was serving as an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), focusing on providing information about the inner workings of the Italian-American Patriarca crime family. In the meantime, he was building his own lethal operation, believing he was protected by his FBI association. But in 1994, tipped off by his former FBI handler of a pending indictment under the RICO act, Bulger went on the run. For 12 of the 16 years he was in hiding, he was prominently listed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. Furthering Bulger’s mystique, actor Jack Nicholson portrayed a character “loosely based” on the aging mobster in the Academy Award-winning 2006 movie, “The Departed,” which also starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon. In June 2011, the 81-year-old Bulger was arrested in Santa Monica, Calif.

Today, he faces 19 murder counts, as well as charges for conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit extortion, narcotics distribution and conspiracy to commit money laundering extortion. The trial is just beginning, but already it has become a closely watched court drama, with lawyers from both the prosecution and defense verbally sparring in court.

Saturday June 29, beloved British songstress Cheryl Cole, of the former UK girls pop group Girls Aloud and judge on the UK X Factor, celebrated her milestone 30th birthday at Hakkasan Las Vegas inside MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. Cole kicked off her big night with a late dinner at the restaurant arriving at 10:30 pm with 12 of her closest girlfriends. The energetic group dined on Michelin-starred chef Ho Chee Boon's authentic Cantonese cuisine. Following dinner, Cole and friends continued the festivities at the nightclub inside Hakkasan Las Vegas where she drank and danced the night away to the electrifying beats of Hakkasan resident DJ, Calvin Harris in her VIP booth located on the main stage. Later in the evening, she was surprised by the Hakkasan staff as they presented her with a three-tier ornately decorated birthday cake. The songstress had an ear-to-ear smile as confetti flew in the air and her friends cheered in honor of her birthday.

While soaking up the sun, the group hosted a fun social media contest, where they tweeted a photo of them poolside and asked fans to add a caption. Also seen hanging out on property was lead vocalist of rock band Maroon 5, Adam Levine. The singer-songwriter was on a guys trip with a group of friends and was spotted hanging out on property with his crew and enjoying a meal of traditional Japanese dishes at Nobu.

Later in the night, flashing lights surrounded Jennette's section as the club surprised her with a huge birthday presentation along with a “Back to the Future” themed cake.

In celebration of the 27th annual Black & White Party, AFAN joins retailer Macy's and Vegas/Rated magazine on a search to find Las Vegas' "Black & White Fashion Icon." 

Beginning today through Friday, July 5, AFAN will be accepting photo submissions of those sporting the most fashion-forward and unique black and white outfits by email at icon@afanlv.org. The top five submissions - as selected by a committee consisting of AFAN, Macy's and Vegas/Rated representatives - will be featured in a fashion spread in Vegas/Rated's August issue and compete for the chance to win a $1,000 gift cart to Macy's at Fashion Show Mall awarded at the Black & White Party on Saturday, Aug. 24 at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

The five finalists will be announced on Monday, July 8, and will begin soliciting the city for votes. With a fashion focus, the contest also serves as an innovative fundraiser for AFAN with each vote costing $1. Votes are submitted online at bit.ly/BWIconVoteup until Black & White Party when finalists will canvas the venue advocating for cash votes.

"Finding that perfect signature black and white look has become everyone's favorite part of Black & White Party," said Earl Shelton, director of development of AFAN. "We're giving our most trendy party goers a chance to show off their high sense of fashion while supporting AFAN."

From July 22 to Aug. 16, shoppers are encouraged to shop, save and support AFAN by purchasing a Macy's Glam Pass.  With the $10 donation, shoppers receive an all-day savings pass for an extra 15 to 20% off, plus a special bounce back offer for $10 off the next $50 purchase. From every Glam Pass purchase, $5 will benefit the Macy's Passport Fund, which provides grants for local agencies that serve those affected by HIV/AIDS, including AFAN.

Black & White Party will be held at Hard Rock Hotel's Paradise Beach on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. and boasts a unique experience of festivities, celebrations and revelry complete with gourmet food, beverage samplings, eye-catching atmospheric entertainment and live stage performances.
