‘Symphonic Spectacular’ Coming To The Las Vegas Philharmonic

The Las Vegas Philharmonic performs its Pops Series IV concert titled ‘Symphonic Spectacular’ on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center. The program will feature Newman’s Fanfare and popular classics including Rossini’s Overture to The Barber of Seville, Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio italien, Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from On the Town, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol, Sibelius’s Valse triste, and Copland’s Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo.

The performance will begin with a world premiere of Anthony Newman’s Fanfare.  The short work, featuring brass and timpani, was originally composed for the Las Vegas Philharmonic’s 2014 Diamonds Are Forever Gala to welcome honorees Siegfried & Roy.    Newman added strings to the piece for the Philharmonic’s upcoming March 28th performance.   Next, the orchestra will perform the much-loved Overture to The Barber of Seville from one of the great opera composers, Gioachino Rossini.  The overture is well known in more recent years from the Warner Bros. cartoon classic, The Rabbit of Seville.  Following this operatic work, the Philharmonic will showcase Tchaikovsky’s Italian folk song-inspired Capriccio italien, Bernstein’s lively Three Dance Episodes from On the Town, Rimsky-Korsakov’s vibrant Capriccio espagnol, and Sibelius’s Valse triste, a dark waltz originally written for the play Kuolema (Death).  The program will conclude with a celebration of the American West with Copland’s Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo.

"Many of you might be familiar with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops. If not, his concerts were tour-de-forces of orchestral showpieces and became a centerpiece of cultural life in Boston for many decades,” explained Cabrera. “We're recreating these exciting concerts right here in Las Vegas! The music that you're going to hear at this concert will be sure to engage and be thoroughly entertaining, and for those of you not familiar with this concert format, be prepared to have your socks knocked off!"

The Las Vegas Philharmonic offers $26 tickets for balcony seating at all of its 2014-15 season concerts.  Seats in other sections are priced $46, $66 and $96.  Tickets are available from The Smith Center Box Office, phone 702.749.2000 or online from lvphil.org.  A 50% student discount is available on all single ticket purchases (ID required) and a 10% discount is available to seniors and military personnel.   Groups of 10 or more receive 20% off the ticket price by calling the Las Vegas Philharmonic.

Save 15% with a Mini Series Concert Package
The Las Vegas Philharmonic is currently offering 3-concert packages that save 15% off single ticket prices.  Select Symphonic Spectacular and the remaining two performances from the 2014-15 season, 100 Years of Music and A Tribute to the Music of Frank Sinatra, to receive this discount. Full concert schedule and programs can be found online at lvphil.org.  The Mini Series package can be purchased in person from The Smith Center box office, by phone 702.749.2000 or online.

Bus Service
The Las Vegas Philharmonic offers shuttle buses to The Smith Center from Summerlin (Starbright Theatre, 2215 Thomas Ryan Blvd) and Henderson (Anthem Center at Independence Center 2460 Hampton Road.)  Bus passes must be purchased in advance and can be obtained when purchasing concert tickets, or by calling The Smith Center Patron Services at 702.749.2000.  Each bus pass costs $15 roundtrip per concert.

Have you ever been at a concert and thought "I know that tune from somewhere!" Classical showpieces famously (and frequently!) quoted in pop-culture are instantly recognizable as Music Director Donato Cabrera delves into this fiery, fast-paced repertoire that promises to deliver a memorable night at the symphony.  Concert tickets are $26, $46, $66 & $96, available from The Smith Center Box Office via phone 702.749.2000 or online at lvphil.org.

E.J. Cole Rare American Built Motorcycle Auction Coming To South Point

Mecum Auctions will present the E.J. Cole Collection at auction March 20-21, 2015 at South Point Casino and Exhibit Hall in Las Vegas. Representing 50 years of collecting what any motorcycle enthusiast would consider American Treasure, the collection today stands at more than 220 strong and is considered by many to be the finest, most diverse single collection of American-made machines.

1917 Henderson 4 Ex-Steve McQueen
“It is the largest single grouping of American-built motorcycles ever offered to the public from one person’s collection,” commented Ron Christenson, president of Mecum’s Motorcycle division. “We are confident that the entire collection could fetch as much as $15-20 million at auction. It’s an amazing group of motorcycles and its proportion is truly epic. It’s already being dubbed ‘The Antique Motorcycle Auction of the Century.’”

There are several bikes that will headline the offering including many that were previously owned by Steve McQueen as well as two of Cole’s personal favorites, his 1907 Harley-Davidson Strap Tank (Lot S62) and his 1910 Flying Merkel Board Track Racer (Lot S79), both in original and unrestored condition. Other headliners, to name just a few, include Cole’s 1915 Cyclone Board Track Racer formerly owned by Steve McQueen (Lot S57), his 1907 Indian Tri-Car (Lot S67), 1942 Crocker Big Tank (Lot S69) and his 1912 Minneapolis Big 5 Single (Lot S89).

A number of Cole’s motorcycles have been proudly displayed at museums in South Dakota and Iowa. These motorcycles will be gathered up and presented for auction in Las Vegas, but Cole is hopeful the new owners will lend, as he has often done, their newly acquired antique motorcycle to one of the fine motorcycle museums around the United States.

Cole recognizes the unique variety in his collection saying, “I didn’t really have a preference [among makes]. As long as it was a motorcycle and American-made and I didn’t have one, I went after it. I just mainly tried to buy one of everything there was, and that’s about it. I just went for everything.” He also acknowledges his reluctance to let go of what he’s spent more than 50 years putting together. “If my age hadn’t gotten ahead of me, why I’d still be out trying to add to it, but being that I’m 89, I feel like it’s time to quit.” He adds that, “Here at my place nobody gets to see them and they need to be out where people can enjoy them.”

The entire E.J. Cole Collection consists of 239 lots, 231 of those being offered at no reserve. With production years ranging from 1903 to 1991, the collection will be offered at a stand-alone auction this March 20-21. Some of the bikes have never before been seen by the public, let alone offered up for sale, making this offering one of the most unique of its kind.

Downtown Las Vegas is gearing up for a weekend filled with St. Paddy’s day fun, with festivities kicking off tomorrow and running through the luckiest day of the year on Tuesday. From fun giveaways, drink specials, and even a group of competing firefighters, hotels such as the D and Golden Gate, as well as the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center will be going green.

Competing Firefighters – The Downtown Las Vegas Events Center (DLVEC) will host Las Vegas Valley Firefighters’ annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Firefighter Fun Challenge on Tuesday, March 17. At noon, a parade of uniformed firefighters and honor guards led by Grand Marshal Terry Murphy of the Honorary Irish Consul to Nevada will gather at the Main Street Stage just outside Golden Gate Hotel & Casino. The group will be joined by festive bagpipers and step dancers as they make their way down the Fremont Street Experience to DLVEC to partake in the Firefighter Fun Challenge. Attendees can enjoy beer, cocktails and food while they cheer on teams of Vegas’ finest as they compete in a tricycle race, wheel barrel race, equipment run, tug of war, hose bowling and garden hose efficiency contest. Trophies will be awarded for individual events and an overall winner. Prize money will be donated to the winners’ charities of choice. The Firefighter Fun Challenge is free to attend and will take place from 1 – 5 p.m.
