Burning Man Art Now On Display In Downtown Las Vegas

Dragomi at Burning Man, Photo Credit: Justin Mitchell
Lyft Las Vegas and Zappos.com have partnered to bring a hallmark experience of Burning Man's infamous touring art to Downtown Las Vegas through an art car in the form of a dragon decked out in neon LED lights, a full sound system, bubbles, fur and more.

Beginning Friday, July 7, and running every Friday and Saturday night throughout the month from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., people in Downtown Las Vegas can open the Lyft app for information on how to sign up for 'Dragon Mode.' After boarding, they'll embark on a free art trek throughout downtown, experiencing other iconic Burning Man art, the Mantis and Big Rig Jig, as well as more than 15 Life is Beautiful installations that have transformed the area, including a mural by artist Shepard Fairey.

Artist Justin Mitchell created "Dragomi," the 20-foot art car that gives tours at Burning Man every year on the Playa alongside other art cars resembling pirate ships, rubber ducks and sharks. He teamed up with fellow artist Josh Levine, owner of Fired Up Management, to create a new street legal car, "Nightcrawler," inspired by Dragomi.

The trek begins and ends at Downtown Container Park. Passengers must be 18 years or older and rides are reserved on a first come, first serve basis.

"Lyft's mission is to always bring people together through transportation and with 'Dragon Mode,' the Las Vegas community will share a once in a lifetime experience in Downtown Las Vegas," said Yacob Girma, Lyft Las Vegas general manager. "We're giving people the opportunity to see beautiful works of art inside of a piece of art. There really is nothing else like it."

"Zappos is always trying to create fun and little weirdness, and this partnership does just that right here in our own community. We hope that our friends and neighbors in Downtown Las Vegas are as WOWed as we are by what a unique experience Lyft has created with the 'Nightcrawler'," said Loren Becker, Zappos experience and community manager.

Taking over the DJ booth at around 2:00 a.m., the “4 Your Eyez Only” rapper performed several of his past and current hits, including “Can’t Get Enough,” “No Role Modelz,” and “Déjà Vu.” The nighttime hot spot was jam-packed with fans who enthusiastically sang along to every word, making for an unbelievable atmosphere inside the sold out nightclub. JEWEL resident DJ Irie flawlessly took over the booth after the hip-hop star’s incredible performance to keep partygoers dancing until the early hours of the morning.

Adding to the excitement, several professional athletes were also in attendance to catch the rapper’s performance, including basketball players James Harden, PJ Tucker, and Jared Dudley, as well as head coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers Tyronn Lue. New Exhibit “Life in Stone” Opens Open Soon At The Gallery Sur In Carmel

"Bundle of Joy" by Agnes Nyanhongo
Brother-and-sister artists Agnes and Moses Nyanhongo are renowned fine art stone sculptors of Zimbabawe's Shona Sculpture Movement, which has captivated art lovers and collectors the world over.

To celebrate the opening of “Life in Stone,” an exhibition of over 40 new stone sculptures at Gallery Sur in Carmel, the internationally celebrated duo will demonstrate their stone sculpting talents at a free event in Devendorf Park in downtown Carmel.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, Agnes and Moses, part of the well-known Nyanhongo family of stone sculptors, will show the various techniques used in their distinctive sculpting process and will share the deep cultural and spiritual traditions expressed in the stone.

Gallery Sur in Carmel  is a North American leader in offering original, one-of-a-kind Zimbabwean stone sculpture. The new “Life in Stone” exhibition, opening August 27 at Gallery Sur, includes Shona sculpture ranging from important traditional works by older, revered artists to contemporary, purely abstract  works from younger, internationally acclaimed Zimbabwean artists.

“For the past 23 years, I’ve had the pleasure of representing a handful of world-class stone sculptors from Zimbabwe,” says Braden Coolidge, artist representative and curator of the show. “Each year I hand-pick a selection that focuses on the very finest quality by a select few artists. This year’s collection is truly stunning. Clearly the most diverse and dynamic body of work I have ever seen, and in 23 years I’ve seen a lot!”

Shona artists often draw inspiration intuitively from their traditional culture: the mythology, folklore, rituals and beliefs in ancestral spirits that remain strong influences in contemporary Zimbabwean life. The integral roles of women in society are also a significant source of inspiration, often expressing the importance of the mother and child relationship and the respect for the elder’s wisdom. Both the physical and spiritual relationship with nature is another important theme, reflecting the country’s deep rural roots.

Utilizing beautiful stones in various colors, unearthed by the artists from remote mines and quarries, their distinctive sculptures are hand-carved using timeworn techniques, without power tools, maintaining a close relationship to the stone.

The Shona Sculpture Movement, which first began in the 1950s, is named after the largest tribe engaged in stone sculpting in Zimbabwe. The name Zimbabwe is derived from the Shona word meaning “house of stone.” In the late 1960s, the new art movement born in Africa was celebrated at the famed Musee Rodin in Paris and Shona sculptors caught the attention of the art world.

Bernard Matemera, one of the founders of the Shona movement described the process of working with stone like this:

“The spirits are everywhere in the air, in the rocks. A rock is like a fruit — like an orange or a banana. You don’t eat them without peeling them first. It needs to be opened to be eaten. I open the rocks. The fruit is inside.”

Gallery Sur also supports the all-volunteer Sahwira Fund, to build classrooms at the Maulana School for Orphans in Epworth, Zimbabwe. Supported by 10% of the proceeds of all sculpture sales, eight classrooms have been built and are now sheltering many of the 800-plus students at the school. 6 more classrooms are planned to meet the demand.

First Weekend Of Legal Marijuana Sales Off To A Smokin' Start In Vegas

The Nevada Dispensary Association (NDA) announced that the first weekend of recreational marijuana sales was a huge success. Locals and tourists alike lined up to legally purchase products beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, July 1.

The NDA and local industry worked diligently to prepare for high consumer demand, with compliance of strict rules and regulations. Licensed dispensaries across Clark, Washoe and Nye counties held celebratory events throughout the weekend to recognize the end of marijuana prohibition statewide. Senator Tick Segerblom has been instrumental in the legislation leading up to the success of this program. “Once again, our state shows the world that if you want to have fun, come to Nevada. And help us pay for our schools,” said Segerblom.

“Based on our sales and my conversations with other businesses, I believe there were at least three to five million dollars in sales over the weekend,” said Nevada Dispensary Association executive director, Riana Durrett. “This aligns with our projected 30 million dollars in sales over the next six months.”

President of the NDA and CEO of The+Source dispensaries, Andrew Jolley, provided his insights as well, noting that “we expect the high demand to continue across the next several weeks, and we couldn’t be happier that we helped to create the legal tax-paying market in this state.”

Please visit www.nvdispense.com/licensed/ for a list of establishments licensed to sell recreational marijuana products and www.nvdispense.com/recreational for general information and FAQ of recreational marijuana.

Made Possible By Britney Spears! New NV Childhood Cancer Campus To Open

The Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation (NCCF) will open the doors to the all-new Britney Spears Campus Monday, July 17 at 3711 East Sunset Road. The new, 16,000 square-foot facility combines more than 45 pediatric and adult services, previously located at two separate locations. In partnership with DC Building Group, Almany Architecture and PENTA Building Group, the size of the foundation will more than double to accommodate the needs of pediatric and adult patients in the community.

The new building is made possible by Britney Spears and her efforts to raise one million dollars with donations from ticket sales from the “Piece of Me” show at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, as well as major donors including Southwest Specialty Contractors, Zappos, Robert Earl, Live Nation, Fusch Commercial Interiors and Design, Caesars Entertainment, Elizabeth Arden and Ann White of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

“There are many things I've done in my career that I am proud of, but none more than this. The fact that I was able to use my celebrity status to raise the money to build this incredible facility to help sick children and their families when they need it the most not only brings many tears to my eyes, but really brings tremendous meaning to this amazing journey that I have been on,” said Spears. “My aunt Sandra died of cancer and I know the devastating effects that this terrible disease brings upon its victims and their loved ones, but when it happens to innocent young children, there's literally nothing I can think of worse than that. I'm just glad that I can help in some small way. I want to thank the NCCF for the amazing work they do on a daily basis and I look forward to being there to officially open the Britney Spears Campus of the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation in the fall.”

NCCF serves more than 400 pediatric patients, survivors and their families each year and is increasing its services and programs to meet the need in southern Nevada. Art Therapy and Parenting Workshops are just two of the new services to be added in 2017.

“We are so thrilled and genuinely excited about moving into our new beautiful location. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Britney Spears for her compassion and dedication to our cause, giving us the means to do this through a recent capital campaign,” said Jeff Gordon, NCCF president and CEO. “The impact this will have on all the families we serve will be immeasurable as it will allow us to take care of even more community members in need of our many services.”

In September 2011, NCCF expanded its services with the addition of a local foundation into its programs, which provides healing arts services at no cost to adults diagnosed with cancer. The Caring Place serves as a complement to medical treatment by providing services including Reiki, reflexology, yoga, stress management, massage, support groups and various other services for adults diagnosed with cancer as well as to their caregivers. With the move to the new building, The Caring Place will double in size to accommodate a 25 percent growth in programming and will extend service hours to provide support to cancer patients who continue to work as they fight a daily battle against cancer.

Additionally, in 2016, the ORION Cancer Foundation Grant Program was transferred to NCCF by Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada. This program, now managed and facilitated by NCCF, provides financial grants to eligible adults living in southern Nevada who are unable to afford the basics of daily living while undergoing treatment for cancer. Applications and funding information are available at www.nvccf.org.

“As our programs and services increase to meet the demand of children and adults diagnosed with cancer living in southern Nevada, we hope that funding and community support will grow as well. We work hard to improve the quality of life for those fighting a daily battle against disease as no one should have to go through it alone,” said Gordon.

A grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting for the Britney Spears Campus is slated for October 2017.

For more information, please call the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation at 702-735-8434 or visit www.nvccf.org. You can also follow the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation on Facebook - www.facebook.com/NVCCF/, Twitter twitter.com/NVCCF and Instagram @NVCCF.

Westgate Wins In Arbitration Against Graceland West Exhibits

Following months of testimony, a court appointed arbitrator recently ruled in favor of the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, in a dispute over the closing of the Graceland West Exhibit and Graceland Chapel in 2016. Per the ruling, “the total amount owed to Westgate (Claimant) by Company (Respondent) considering principles of both law and equity to be $2,247,208.33.”

“While we are very satisfied with the final ruling against the entity owned by Joel Weinshanker that leased the exhibition space from our resort, we are also saddened by the fact that the legacy of Elvis Presley was tarnished by the leasee’s untimely and unnecessary closing of this exhibit,” said Mark Waltrip, Chief Operating Officer of Westgate Resorts. “Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino was the Las Vegas home to Elvis Presley for many years, and we will continue to explore other opportunities to honor this musical legend.”
