Sin City Opera's Next Performance Will Be La Périchole

Sin City Opera presents Jacques Offenbach’s hilarious comedic opéra bouffe, La Périchole at the Winchester Cultural Center May 6th – 15th, 2016.  Sin City Opera will present the production in English with the SCO Orchestra.  Skip Galla, SCO’s Artistic Director has updated the libretto and will helm the production.  “The creative core for this newly translated production is the essence of early French comedic opera.  It is bawdy, it is fun, and it knows how to poke fun at itself.  Imagine a story told by a drunk Frenchman about the love triangle of two Spanish street singers and a lusty king with a closetful of disguises.  Now set it to the charismatic music of Offenbach and we’ve got ourselves an evening!  Definitely opera at its lightest, funniest, and most irreverent!”

La Périchole's title character will be played by nationally recognized, mezzo-soprano, Lauren McAllister and is based on Micaela Villegas, a beloved 18th century Peruvian entertainer and the famous mistress of Manuel de Amat y Juniet, Viceroy of Peru from 1761 to 1776. The story concerns two impoverished Peruvian street-singers, La Périchole and Piquillo (played by Las Vegas tenor, Kevin Harvey) who are too poor to afford a marriage license, and the laughable, lecherous Viceroy, who wishes to make La Périchole his mistress. The score has has been called Offenbach's "most charming", with boleros, seguidillas and galops which provide the exotic backdrop for this easy-to-reach opera favorite.
